I've enjoyed a career in human resources winning a few industry awards like Rising Star, HR Award of Excellence and an Innovation award. However, I began looking for a new challenge, something very different. Fortunately, I found an exciting executive director role that allowed me to stay close to the HR profession. Seven months ago, I accepted the position of CEO of the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources of Nova Scotia. We represent, influence and advance the profession to make Nova Scotia the workplace of choice.

My board introduced me to CSAE as they had positive experiences with the association. I became a member right away, and it wasn't long before I started to see the benefits. I gained an excellent foundation in governance and association strategy by completing the CAE® 100 course as I work towards the CAE® designation. I'm also feeling fortunate to be able to volunteer as a speaker in the CSAE 2019 Conference.

I’m the managing director of AMC NPO Solutions and we’ve been helping not-for-profits with governance and strategic planning since 1987. I joined CSAE after my father, Tom Abbott Sr, B.Comm., CGA, CAE passed away. He is the founder of the company, the architect of the Complementary Model of Board Governance, and a winner of  the Dalton N. Murphy Award by the CSAE BC Network. With over 25 years experience as CEO, president and board director for several not-for-profit organisations, I’ve spoken in over 20 countries. I’m also set to speak at the CSAE 2019 Conference in Vancouver. I’m passionately committed to building effective partnerships between volunteer boards and staff, and helping to set the strategic direction of not-for-profit organisations.

Not only will this ensure that you are not opening yourself up to indefinite liability, but these valuable documents also help introduce employees to the organization’s culture, mission and values and help drive consistent customer service, work habits, and company objectives...

At the end of a normal day, I am tired and my clothes are rumpled. But, sometimes stuff happens and the day is anything but normal. And it is invariably on a day when I least expect it. What makes the days when stuff happens work for me is that I am prepared for the predictable.

CSAE’s newest publication!

Reputations take years to establish and can be damaged in mere moments. Organizations can mitigate and repair damage by preparing. Tailored for associations and not-for-profit organizations of all sizes and types, this book guides the reader through all stages of crisis preparation with a straightforward approach.

Excerpt: “There is an old saying, “Not planning is planning to fail.” That applies as much to preparing to manage an issue as it does to achieving more positive goals. Associations that ignore the possibility of something going wrong are deluding themselves. A little bit of preparation and forethought can be that extra ounce of protection to mitigate damage and speed recovery after a disaster. The reality is that for many executives, crisis preparation only makes the top of the priority list after they have lived through a disaster that caused them and/or their association harm.

By Huw Williams

Because Canada’s complex lobbying and government relations landscape is always changing, this popular CSAE publication is a must-have for any association professional looking to develop their GR skills.

Excerpt: “Historically, many associations were formed to deal primarily with advocacy issues. Today, even more associations have taken on government relations responsibilities as the ever-increasing reach of government affects the concerns of individuals and not-for-profit organizations. Whether the purpose of the association is to represent individuals, professionals, or business-based concerns, a formal government relations approach is more necessary than ever.”
