Membership Spotlight

Member (most recently) since 2016

I’ve been a CSAE member since the 1990s during my hotel days, then in the 2000s at the Ottawa Congress Centre, and in the 2010s at the Shaw Centre and now in my current role as Director, Business Development for Intertask Conferences, where I manage marketing initiatives, provide strategic conference management advice to our existing clients and look for new clients.

Connecting with business members in similar roles promotes collaborative best practices; networking with executive members leads to new opportunities; participating in CSAE events — both at the national and network level — expands my professional network; and volunteering on the Ottawa-Gatineau Network communications committee allows me to give back to the vibrant not-for-profit community that has given so much to me. Onto the 2020s!

I’m Geoff Thacker, executive partner of the research practice with The Portage Group. I joined CSAE because I am passionate about helping associations make decisions that are informed by excellent data and sector insights. My TPG colleagues and I are always happy to lean in to help CSAE in any way we can, whether that is as their research partner, contributing our expertise through CSAE publications, speaking at events, or by rolling up our sleeves on various local committees and network executives. CSAE is a cornerstone of my business network filled with great people who are focused beyond the bottom line and who seek to make the world better for professionals and organizations across this country.

Excerpt: Dealing with the media is a risky and high-pressure business for association staff and board members. Answering a journalist’s questions incorrectly or mishandling a media enquiry can be like a high wire act gone awry with immediate negative career implications. In my experience, association members have high expectations that the media will be handled professionally by their leaders. Too often, media missteps are a short path to an association member revolt. A disastrous interview can lead to a virtual lynching.
