In its sixth year, MODERN SALON Media has worked with the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS) to develop MODERN SALON’s Excellence in Education program. The purpose is to help the professional beauty school community gather, share and celebrate examples of great salon education experiences and beauty career development happening across the country.

In 2016, the crop of cosmetology schools entering the program brought plenty of benchmarks, measurable results and innovation into their application process. See the list of finalists here.

This webinar reviewed key components for effective GE process appeals, outlined methods for assessing GE components and rates, and discussed a range of potential program and operational changes that may improve compliance with the GE Debt to Earnings ratio requirements. To watch the recording of this webinar click here (you will be asked to give your name and email address). You can also download a copy of the slides here. Thank you to Ron Holt of the law firm: Douthit, Frets, Rouse, Gentile & Rhodes, for conducting the valuable webinar for our members.

Government Relations
The U.S. Department of Education has released its defense-to-repayment rules, which sets a standard for determining when a borrower has a legitimate defense to loan repayment. AACS submitted comments to the Department of Education, opposing the rules as proposed during the open comment period. The new rules address substantial changes to the financial responsibility standards. The AACS Government Relations Committee is currently reviewing the Department’s 900 pages of regulations and will provide updates and commentary in the near future.

The final rules can be seen HERE.

The Department has announced the Draft GE Debt-to-Earnings (D/E) Rates Challenge Period:
  • October 24 to December 7, 2016
  • Click here for the IFAP Announcement Details
You should have received all of your back-up GE data detail in your SAIG mailbox by now. You can also request it from the professional NSLDS site:
In addition, the Department posted the webinar this week on "Gainful Employment: Reading Your Draft GE Debt-to-Earnings (D/E) Rates Files." There are very important slides, details and information on how to access your data, and general concepts on how to read your data. Keep an eye out for the second webinar, "Gainful Employment: Submitting Draft GE Debt-to-Earnings (D/E) Challenges." You can access the first webinar through the link below: Click Here

One of the most helpful references to remind all of us of this process is included in this announcement from June 30, 2015. I find to be a very helpful overview of this process: Click Here

PR Tips

"Recently, Dr. Jean Norris and I hosted a webinar, "Goodbye Admissions Interview – Hello P.E.A.," that explored the idea of updating the traditional admissions approach by incorporating pre-enrollment advising (P.E.A.). During the webinar, we discuss how the role of the admissions professional has evolved and continues to change, especially given the climate in higher education today. It is no longer about simply matching students to a program that your institution offers. With today’s student, it is more important than ever that admissions representatives consider the idea of "fit" when helping prospective students select a college or career program."

Learn more about P.E.A. in this Norton Norris blog post.
