State Relations Committee

Meet Your AACS State Rep: Kansas

Len Melvin (Kansas)
Hays Academy of Hair Design, Co-Owner and Marketing

How long have you been in the beauty school business?
11 years (seven years full-time)

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I taught at the middle school level and coached high school sports for eight years. My mom was a college teacher and dean for 35 years, so education has been in my blood. I get to work with my beautiful wife daily and we have three very beautiful girls. Aspen is 9 (in two weeks), Willow is 7 and Lendyn is 3.

Why is it important for you to be involved with AACS and the State Relations Committee?
John Halal introduced us to the AACS at a Nuts and Bolts Conference. He explained why we needed to become members and made us aware of the importance of getting involved. Since then, we became members, attend the conventions regularly and appreciate everything so much. Because of this, I have become eager to get involved in an effort to help in any way possible. There are too many benefits to risk missing out on!

Reignite Your Fire with Continuing Education
According to one of America’s greatest entrepreneurs, the secret to eternal youth just might be learning. Consider the words of Henry Ford, "Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young." Today, continuing education is about much more than staying young. Indeed, it is a matter of survival. In addition to possessing the technical knowledge of cut, color and cosmetics, beauty and wellness educators must also be savvy in terms of career placement, student retention, classroom engagement, and did we mention compliance? Read Your Fire: Your Purpose in the latest edition of BeautyLink.
