Lawsuits Threaten AACS Schools
From Jim Cox, AACS CEO:
I wanted to follow up with you about the lawsuits pending around the country against some of our member schools. As you know, we became aware of these lawsuits in October. We now know of at least seven cases against member and non-member schools. The cases all allege the same thing—that students should be paid while enrolled in school and learning in the student clinic. We think that these cases are meritless, but obviously they have the potential to have a profound effect on our sector.
It’s important that the schools win these cases. One thing I worry about though is that there may be some small school out there that’s been sued and either settles or doesn’t handle the defense appropriately. A bad outcome has the potential to set a dangerous precedent, so we’re monitoring the cases we know about closely with our counsel. We can’t monitor what we don’t know though—here’s where I need your help. If you have been or know of someone who has been sued by one of these lawyers, please contact me or the office so that we can be aware of what’s going on.
