What's Hot
As 2019 approaches, we’ve been reflecting on what an impactful year 2018 has been. It has brought challenges to overcome (rescinding of Gainful Employment) and new faces to welcome (Executive Director, Kathy Chow). Our final event of this year (2018 Annual) reignited a sense of collaboration and commitment to the growth of the beauty and wellness industry like we’ve never seen before. We would like to thank YOU, the members, for sticking with us through it all. We value your loyalty and are eager to band together in 2019 under the Power of One to emerge stronger than ever. Earlier this fall a federal district court judge in Michigan granted summary judgment to a group of students seeking to be paid as employees for certain "work" performed in their school's clinic. AACS has been closely monitoring this case in the weeks since the ruling. On November 30, 2018, AACS General Counsel Edward Cramp of Duane Morris filed a motion seeking leave to appear as amicus curiae in the case in order to present the judge with the AACS’ concerns and support of the school's request for an immediate appeal of the order. The current week finds only five state legislatures actively meeting. December legislative activity of interest to AACS members however has taken place in Michigan, New Jersey and Ohio. As we end 2018 and look towards 2019 with all 50 states in legislative session, AACS will continue to report on bills of interest and impact to your school. In Michigan, the House voted 106 to 1 last week to send SB 751 to Governor Rick Snyder (R). As previously reported, the measure would allow cosmetology students who have completed 350 hours of instruction, and met specific academic requirements, to perform shampooing services – both shampooing and blow drying – on members of the public in a cosmetology establishment. It also includes language stating an individual who is performing shampooing services pursuant to this measure may continue to do so “without a license for a period of 30 days after the date the individual is scheduled to graduate from the school of cosmetology.” Member Events
