Earlier this fall a federal district court judge in Michigan granted summary judgment to a group of students seeking to be paid as employees for certain "work" performed in their school's clinic. AACS has been closely monitoring this case in the weeks since the ruling. On November 30, 2018, AACS General Counsel Edward Cramp of Duane Morris filed a motion seeking leave to appear as amicus curiae in the case in order to present the judge with the AACS’ concerns and support of the school's request for an immediate appeal of the order. AACS is looking for volunteers to help plan and execute our three major conventions in 2019. The AACS Event Committee brings together industry leaders from multiple areas to collaborate and create events that are the premier forum for beauty and wellness education professionals. Get your applications in to be considered for a speaking position at the 2019 School Leaders Summit & Capitol Hill Day. This March 4-6 in Washington DC, we will focus on key topics such as government relations for federal and state, accreditation, and succession planning. While 2018 is winding down, the 2019 Beauty Changes Lives scholarship season is just getting started. Effective December 1, 2018, applications are being accepted for four “Winter 2019” cosmetology scholarships and one esthetics scholarship. All of the winter scholarships are generously funded by the Sydell & Arnold Miller Family Foundation. Students enrolled at an AACS member school are strongly encouraged to apply. Your AACS Government Relations Committee has been hard at work this week as over 15 committee members convened in Phoenix, AZ for a Strategy Development Summit. At this 2-day gathering, the committee collaborated, keeping AACS member needs at the forefront, to build a legislative and regulatory strategy for 2019 and beyond.
