In California, both the Assembly and the Senate voted unanimously last week to pass a measure requiring the health and safety course taught in schools to cover physical and sexual abuse awareness.  Once signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown (D), the effective date of the Act will be July 1, 2019 to ensure congruity with other curriculum changes being implemented by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology’s (BBC) Health and Safety Advisory Committee.     

In Ohio, the Senate Government Oversight and Reform Committee heard testimony last week on SB 129 from the bill’s sponsors – Senator Kris Jordan (R) and Senator Charleta Tavares (D).  Proponent and opponent testimony from interested parties will likely occur later as it is common practice in Ohio for bills to have multiple hearings in the same committee.
