What's Hot
Your AACS Government Relations Committee continues to fight every day for the future of our students and schools. The new Administration and continuing Republican-controlled Congress provide us with new opportunities to "repeal and replace" harmful regulations developed and implemented over the past eight years. However, it will take time to unwind, unravel and undo the complex web of provisions that are adversely affecting your students and schools—we will still need to be prepared to engage in discussions/negotiations on more equitable reforms to higher education policy. The good news is that both Congress and the Administration are listening to our requests, have begun to take actions in support of our future and are likely to do even more once the key posts are filled within the Department of Education and Congress begins to develop and deliberate on the next series of additions, revisions and rescissions to the Higher Education Act. Be a part of this important conversation and more - register for the 2017 School Leaders Summit today.
We get it. You’ve got enough on your plate. There’s always a deadline, and there’s always somewhere you need to be. It can be hard to genuinely pay attention, especially when you’ve got a long to-do list that’s occupying your mental energy. However, active listening doesn’t just benefit your conversational counterpart -- you also stand to gain from it. From making sure you don’t miss important details, to exercising focus for any important task, putting these phrases into practice can help you become a proactive, empathetic listener. Amanda Zantal-Wiener from Hubspot gives a great reminder on the importance of active listening that will be beneficial both at the office and at home.

GRC News
Governor Otter stated in a veto statement that HB 139 "is a case of reasonable, consensus-driven ideas from the State Board of Cosmetology and the Board of Barber Examiners getting burned in what is supposed to be the refining fire of our legislative process." Meanwhile, the Texas Senate Business and Commerce Committee conducted a public hearing last Thursday on SB 1087, which would reduce the course of instruction for cosmetology from 1,500 to 1,000 hours. Testifying against the bill in that hearing was John Blair from Ogle Schools, Codi Mims from Paul Mitchell the School Arlington, and Sonya Smith from Paul Mitchell the School Dallas.

Watch the hearing and read more about these bills in this week’s AACS State Relations Update.
