Michigan, New Jersey and Ohio Legislatures Debate Cosmetology Bills in Year-End Push

The current week finds only five state legislatures actively meeting.  December legislative activity of interest to AACS members however has taken place in Michigan, New Jersey and Ohio.  As we end 2018 and look towards 2019 with all 50 states in legislative session, AACS will continue to report on bills of interest and impact to your school.

In Michigan, the House voted 106 to 1 last week to send SB 751 to Governor Rick Snyder (R).  As previously reported, the measure would allow cosmetology students who have completed 350 hours of instruction, and met specific academic requirements, to perform shampooing services – both shampooing and blow drying – on members of the public in a cosmetology establishment.  It also includes language stating an individual who is performing shampooing services pursuant to this measure may continue to do so “without a license for a period of 30 days after the date the individual is scheduled to graduate from the school of cosmetology.”
