Loose Lips Can Sink Ships and Schools
While
loose lips can sink the proverbial ship, they can also sink the reputation of a
school. November is "sweeps month," a time when investigative reporters are on
the hunt for scandalous stories. Three simple media interview rules can help
you steer clear of potentially unflattering coverage. Here they are:
1.) Don’t
be rushed. If a reporter shows up at your school unannounced or wants an
immediate phone interview, request that she make an appointment.
2.) Ask the reporter to describe the story she is working on developing. What is she trying to share with viewers? Why would she like to include you in the story? Contact the AACS office if in doubt about a sensitive topic; the GRC is a valuable member benefit.
3.) Never, ever say, "off the record," no matter how friendly the reporter.
