Meet Your AACS State Rep: Utah

Brenda Scharman (Utah), Co-Chair of State Relations Committee
Cameo College of Essential Beauty/Owner

How long have you been in the beauty school business?
I grew up in the business but have been owner for 29 years.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I became owner of my school after the death of my mother. Although I grew up in the business, I was not a beauty professional. I quit my job and started school in my own school. My mother had been in a coma for six months, so the business had all but closed. I was one of five students. I really didn't have an interest in the beauty business and was a far cry from a natural, but I did not want to see what my parents had worked so hard for go away.

Why is it important for you to be involved with AACS and the State Relations Committee?
AACS provides the connection and interlocking needed to remain successful in today's fast paced world. Our industry is one in a million that although we may be competitors, we want each other to succeed. When we all succeed our industry grows. We empower each other. By being involved in the State Relations Committee, it keeps us all alert and aware of what is going on across the country so we can be prepared for anything and everything. This is vital in protecting our industry. We all must stick together and help each other anyway possible. I also like to be educated by others of efforts within their state. Learning from others helps me be stronger when I talk to our legislators and governing officials. The data collected within our committee holds weight when shared in industry conversation.
