An Eventful Tuesday as State House Committees Vote on Impactful Hour Reduction and Gainful Employment Measures

The second week of February finds 42 states in legislative session. A number of legislative chambers have bill introduction deadlines this week, including the: Arizona House, Kentucky Senate, and West Virginia House, as well as both chambers in Iowa, Kansas and New Mexico. Additionally, today (February 14) is the deadline for each chamber of Mississippi’s legislature to pass bills originating in its chamber. As always, AACS will continue to keep you apprised of the latest state legislative developments of interest to member schools. A Virginia House Subcommittee voted 4 to 4 Tuesday to kill a Senate bill that would have reduced the course of instruction for cosmetology and barbering to 1,000 hours. SB 1568 was unanimously passed by the Senate in January. As previously reported, the House companion bill – HB 2335 – failed to advance from a different House General Laws Subcommittee last month.
