Democrats Make Inroads in State Elections

Democrats made significant gains in state control as a result of last week’s election.  Prior to Election Day, Republicans had a “trifecta” – meaning that they controlled the state’s House, Senate and Governor – in 26 states.  Democrats fully controlled 7 states and 17 were divided.

Once the newly elected office holders are sworn in early next year, Republicans will fully control 21 states, Democrats will control 14 states, and 13 will be divided.  Nebraska with a non-partisan unicameral legislature and Georgia with a governor's race that has yet to be officially called are not included in this count.
