FVRD Bylaw 1495 - sorting requirements come into effect April 2020

Following a consultation conducted by the Fraser Valley Regional District and municipalities, the proposed bylaw was approved in the Fall 2018 and comes into effect on April 1, 2020. The new sorting requirements do not change diversion programs already in place.

They will apply to all residents (single and multifamily), businesses and institutions. All sectors will need to separate recyclable and compostable material from the garbage stream (except for those exempt under the regional solid waste management plan).

The FVRD is working with waste management service providers in the region, and providing them with the support they need to inform their customers about the need to put in place sorting systems and staff training to ensure compliance on or before Spring 2020.

The Recycling Hotline of BC (1-800-REC-YCLE) is poised to answer questions about the new FVRD sorting requirements and handle inquiries about the types of materials that can be recycled or composted and best sorting practices for different sectors.
