Exterior Means of Egress Structural Inspections Program

Print this Article | Send to Colleague

On June 25, 2020, a new Fire By-law provision took effect, which may impact your property. Please read Bulletin 2020-001. At this time, buildings four storeys or higher are subject to the inspections by a professional engineer.

On routine inspections by Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS), an assessment of whether a building has an exterior stair, passageway, fire escape or other exterior means of egress structure that requires an inspection by a professional engineer and tags will be done. If it is determined that a professional engineer assessment and tags are required, VFRS will work with the building owner and manager to accomplish this in a timely manner.

Please be aware of your responsibilities as a building owner or manager to maintain the building in good repair. Identify and keep a record of all activities related to inspection, tests and maintenance performed on your building on a regular basis.

VFRS will be conducting routine inspections of buildings with the current safety protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic, including social distancing and wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment.

If you have any questions on this program contact 3-1-1.
