BOMA Facts

How long have you been a BOMA New York member and how did you first get involved with the Association?
I joined BOMA New Jersey in 1984 and over the years in New Jersey, I’ve served on the Board of Directors and also chaired the Golf Outing event. At the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference in 1989, I met a few BOMA New York members who have still remained close friends to this day. Many years later, several BOMA New York members convinced me to open an office in New York City in 2000.  The following year, I joined BOMA New York and still remain a member to this day.

What are some of your responsibilities as a member of BOMA New York’s Board of Directors?
I am the vendor liaison and was elected to the board in January 2020.  Because of COVID, many of the responsibilities have been limited due to shutdowns, but my main function is to bridge the gap between the Board of Directors and the vendors.

Prior to Covid-19, what was your favorite BOMA New York event and why?
My favorite is the Annual Membership Rooftop event. It has given me the opportunity to network with peers and develop new relationships.

BSS was founded in 1982, headquartered in Essex County, NJ.  When did you decide to make the jump over the river and was it something specific?
After becoming involved in BOMA NJ and meeting several NYC property managers in the year 2000, I decided to expand into New York City.  We expanded BSS into Manhattan, and eventually, into the other boroughs.

The BSS brand is synonymous with good service. How is that exemplified and how is it trained?
We always make sure the customer comes first because if they are happy, they will stay with us for many years.  I’m proud of the many great relationships we’ve built with our clients over the years.  We’re in constant communication with our clients so our response time is faster than the industry average by a large margin.  Our clients can always get a hold of us and that is something they really appreciate.  Not to mention, we have high quality officer training, field management supervision and we treat all of our employees extremely well.

Building security is an evolving field, changing and growing as new technologies develop.  What are some of the new innovations to expect within the next 12-24 months?
BSS recently implemented new systems to keep track of officers while also going green with paperless incident reports and hybrid vehicles. This includes real time reporting to our clients and much, much more.  Going green and constantly keeping up with technology is important and we expect those areas to continue to change and develop over the next two years.

What’s your advice to someone starting out in the security services industry?
You’ll want to spend some time starting from the bottom as a security guard to get an idea of how a business could run.  That’s how I started.  By doing this, you’ll obtain proper training, learn field management and appreciate how operations can function.  From there, everything else is learn as you go, with procedural systems in place.

When you are not working, what do you enjoy doing with your spare time?
Making pizza with my kids and grandkids in our pizza oven.  I enjoy my boat during the summer months, and try to make as many people laugh as I can.  I’m a true kid at heart.
