BOMA Facts

We sat down with Nick G. Hayden, CFM, LEED GA – the National Director of Integrated Facility Management at Jones Lang LaSalle Americas Inc. to learn more about his involvement with BOMA New York.

How long have you been a BOMA New York member and how did you first get involved with the Association?
I was first introduced to BOMA during my first real estate job at First Winthrop Corp, over 30-years ago.  It was then where I recognized the value of both the educational and networking opportunities the Association brought to real estate executives, both emerging and seasoned.

What are some of your responsibilities as a member of BOMA New York’s Board of Directors and how do you expect to add value over the next calendar year?
In addition to the generic responsibilities of being on the Board of Directors, I hope to add value to BOMA New York by helping the Association attract transformative technology and innovative ideas to this fast-changing industry.

What’s your favorite BOMA New York event or memory?
Whether it be the Annual Membership Event on the rooftop of 230 Fifth, the Holiday Luncheon, the Golf Outing, and of course the Pinnacles – each event has its own set of merits of being great, as well as provides unique opportunities to connect with multiple people within our industry.  One of my most memorable events was the first time our team won a Pinnacle Award.  The award and recognition by our industry peers gave our team a great sense of accomplishment and pride that went beyond the confines of our property.

Do you think being a BOMA New York member has influenced your career and role at JLL?  If so, how and is there anyone specific to thank?
Without question – YES.  Throughout my career, BOMA New York has been a tremendous resource, providing me with a wealth of industry knowledge and expertise that has been invaluable to myself and many coworkers.  Whether it is the educational programs or dealing with local Codes and Regs, BOMA New York has always been there to provide an indispensable resource to our industry.  That dedication helps make all of us better at what we do.

While there are many people to thank and recognize over the years, there is one individual who has been a constant with BOMA New York.  Bobbi McGowan is our resident nucleus.  Together with her team, she leads by example and ensures that BOMA New York stays on course.  From our signature events to the many educational programs, Bobbi gets it done with a smile and makes it look easy.

If you could give some advice to someone starting out in the commercial real estate industry, what would you share with them?
The commercial real estate industry has endless opportunities for someone just getting into the business, or even someone who has been in it for years.  I recommend to always be open to learning and regularly ask questions.  The relationships you create will be there for your entire career.  They will become your friends, mentors, partners, employers and employees.  From time to time, these connections will be your heroes when they help you out of a jam.

Our industry has multiple disciplines and something for everyone.  Whether you choose Management, Operations, Leasing, Project Management or Corporate Real Estate – find your passion, treat the property like you own it and most importantly, Have Fun!
