Social Media and Mental Health

In today's digital world, most people have at least one social media account. At least 3.6 billion people around the world use social media as of 2020. However, studies are showing that social media can have a negative impact on many people's mental health, increasing feelings of depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

It is important to understand how social media impacts our emotions so we can develop a healthy relationship with social media, taking control of how and when we interact online. It is time we all take a good look at our own usage.

Love research? Looking for new points of access?

Did you know that you can access up-to-date (American) research for free? The National Academies Press (NAP) publishes the reports of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The NAP publishes more than 200 books a year on a wide range of topics in science, engineering, and medicine. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are private, non-profit institutions that provide expert advice on some of the most pressing challenges facing the United States and the world. They have a solid reputation as a premier source of independent, expert advice on scientific, engineering, and medical issues. They offer more than 8,500 titles in PDF format. Almost all of these PDFs can be downloaded for free by the chapter or the entire book from www.nap.edu. A current favourite of mine is the 2019 publication, “Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout:  A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being,” available at www.nap.edu/catalog/25521/taking-action-against-clinician-burnout-a-systems-approach-to-professional. Please note that you will need to login to view the documents, but that you can do so as a guest.

The Learning Curve
Free Courses with OpenLearn

Love learning? Looking for something to do to expand your horizons without having to pay tuition or sign up for a full class or program? OpenLearn, from the Open University in the UK, might be for you! You can choose an OpenLearn course from a wide range of subjects, some of which are based on Open University course materials, while others are written specifically for OpenLearn. All free courses are available immediately; they do not have a start and end date so you can start right away or at a time that suits you and work through at your own pace. You can spend as long as you like on an OpenLearn course, plus, if you sign up you can track your progress and work toward a statement of participation.

There are around 1,000 courses to choose from, which always focus on a specific area of learning. Some focus on important and fascinating academic subjects, while others help you develop skills needed for study or work. If you're interested in taking an Open University course but are not sure what to study or if distance learning is right for you, OpenLearn lets you get a feel for what's on offer.
