Updates on Efforts and Resources Related to Transplant Nephrology Training
In fall 2024, the ACGME approved the application from the joint ASN-AST Task Force to recognize transplant nephrology as an accredited subspecialty of nephrology. By supporting a broad and nationwide adoption of uniformly rigorous transplant nephrology training, ASN and AST hope to improve the quality of care provided to patients in both the pre-and post-transplant phases.

A webpage has been created to share ongoing updates and resources related to this new accreditation.
New AJT Article: Transplant Recipients Share Perspectives on Immunosuppressant Needs
Source: American Journal of Transplantation
Last year, with your support, AST conducted a national patient survey that received nearly 10,000 responses from transplant recipients. The goal: to better understand perceptions of unmet immunosuppressant needs. The findings from this important research have now been published in the American Journal of Transplantation.

Deep Learning-Based MRI Volumetry for Living Kidney Donor Assessment: A New Tool for Predicting Post-Donation Renal Function
Source: Wiley Online Library
Living kidney donation is a crucial option for addressing the global organ shortage and providing kidney transplantation for patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease. Ensuring donor safety necessitates a comprehensive preoperative assessment of kidney anatomy and function. This study evaluates the relationship between kidney volumes derived from deep learning-based MRI volumetry, intraoperative kidney volume measurements, split renal function measured by renal scintigraphy, and post-donation eGFR. Deep learning-based MRI volumetry is hypothesized to be a reliable method with good correlation.
Transitioning Pediatric Liver Transplant Recipients to Adult Transplant Hepatology: A Practical Guide and Future Directions
Source: Wiley Online Library
Transition of care from pediatric to adult providers occurs during a time of increased risk, especially in the liver transplant population where close follow-up and adherence to immunologic therapies are critical to patient and graft survival. While there is a substantial body of literature supporting the need for improved transition from pediatric to adult care, concrete steps on how to implement a clinic and partner with adult colleagues are lacking. This article aims to provide a flexible pathway for transition clinics that can be tailored to an institution's unique needs while also advocating for system-wide change to better support transitions in care, specifically through the lens of the United States health care system.

Individual- and Community-level Socioeconomic Status and Liver Transplant Outcomes: A Retrospective Cohort Study
Source: Springer Nature Link
This study evaluated the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) at both the individual- and community-level and clinical outcomes among liver transplant recipients. A retrospective cohort study was conducted with 1567 deceased donor liver transplantation cases performed at Mayo Clinic Arizona from 2004 to 2022. Predictors included insurance status, self-reported education, the HOUsing-based index of Socioeconomic Status (HOUSES) index, and the Area Deprivation Index (ADI). The primary outcome was time to graft failure, analyzed using Cox proportional hazard models. The secondary outcome was mortality, also analyzed using Cox proportional hazard models. Exploratory outcomes included 30-day readmission and follow-up appointments using Poisson regression models. The sample was 66% male and 73% non-Hispanic White.

Characterizing the Immune Response in Pig-to-human Heart Xenografts Using a Multimodal Diagnostic System
Source: AHA | ASA Journals
Porcine genome editing has revolutionized xenotransplantation, recently enabling the first pig-to-human heart xenotransplants. However, the xeno-immune response in heart xenografts remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to precisely characterize the xeno-immune response and injury in two heart xenografts, transplanted from 10-gene-edited pigs into brain-dead human recipients.
