DR. KAREN B. SALMON SERVING AS INTERIM DEPUTY STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOL EFFECTIVENESS/CHIEF PERFORMANCE OFFICER

On January 4th, Jack R. Smith, Ph.D, Interim State Superintendent of Schools, MSDE announced the resignation of Penelope Thornton Talley as Chief Performance Officer for the Maryland State Department of Education.  Penelope's last day will be January 13th.
 
Dr. Smith also announced that that Dr. Karen B. Salmon will be serving as Interim Deputy State Superintendent of School Effectiveness/Chief Performance Officer, effective January 14 through June 30, 2016. Dr. Salmon currently serves as the Assistant State Superintendent for the Division of Career and College Readiness and before that, was the Superintendent of Schools for the Bay Shore Union Free School District in New York. Prior to that role, Dr. Salmon’s career was in Maryland as the Superintendent of Schools in Talbot County, where she also served as the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and the Coordinator of Services for Exceptional Children.  She can be reached at karen.salmon@maryland.gov and 410.767.0464.
