In recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, AATA is offering a virtual Continuing Education session, Honoring Our Roots: Asian Heritage in Art Therapy Practice, free for AATA Members. This session features a series of micro-presentations followed by a panel discussion that highlights how Asian cultural heritage can enrich art therapy practice, deepen cultural humility, and foster more inclusive care. Participants may earn 2 CE credits.

AATA first published brief undergraduate program recommendations in 1996. The AATA Undergraduate Education Committee has carried that work forward over multiple decades and released comprehensive Undergraduate Guidelines in August 2025. The AATA Undergraduate Pre-Art Therapy Education Guidelines were created to support educators, institutions, and prospective students in undergraduate art therapy programs — covering ethical practice, rigorous coursework, and preparation for graduate-level study. Every year, AATA recognizes outstanding Members through the Scholarships and Awards program. These honors celebrate excellence in art therapy across research, clinical practice, advocacy, education, and service. More than 15 scholarships and awards are available, including support for attending AATA2026 in Charlotte. This is an opportunity to recognize and elevate exceptional contributions across the profession. Applications and nominations are open now and must be submitted by June 12.
Jennifer DeLucia, DAT, ATR-BC, LCAT, Chair of Syracuse University’s Department of Creative Arts Therapy, shares her experience bringing nine art therapy students to the AATA2025 in-person conference. Dr. DeLucia successfully advocated for her university's art therapy program to cover all conference related expenses for the students—five of whom also presented research they were working on with program faculty. “Creating access to professional spaces like AATA is more than professional development – it’s community-building,” Dr. DeLucia explains. “When institutions invest in access and representation, they foster belonging, mentorship, and professional identity.” Her students reported making 3-5 professional connections each. Nearly all (89%) said they had “clear plans” to apply what they learned.
ADVOCACY UPDATES
The New York state budget was finalized this week. Unfortunately, the proposals supported by the LCAT Advocacy Coalition to add LCATs to the Medicaid provider list and commercial health insurance plans was not included in this year’s budget. The Coalition has worked hard in the past months to advance these proposals—working with state legislators, meeting with NY Gov. Kathy Hochul’s staff, and growing the coalition to include additional labor unions. GET INVOLVED!
