Art Therapy Today

AATA News

Art therapy for military servicemembers and veterans has emerged as particularly effective for addressing their unique mental health challenges, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), combat-related trauma, suicidality, or transitioning into civilian life. Research shows that art-making helps improve overall mental health and offers a nonverbal form of communication when words are inadequate in the face of trauma and similar experiences.

AATA’s upcoming Monthly Learning Session, Beyond the Felt Sense, will examine neurobiological and physiological research on specific art materials and processes. Whether you’re an art therapy student or new professional looking to learn more — or a seasoned professional seeking the latest research, join us for this virtual Continuing Education session!

This session will focus on findings from a collection of neurobiological and physiological research on distinct art materials and within the clinical practice of art therapy. Presenter Kerry Kruk-Borisov, ATR-BC, LPC, MS, will summarize empirical research findings as well as explore the theoretical underpinnings that guide such neurobiological and physiological research. She will draw from the concluding chapter of the recently published (2024) 2nd Edition of Art Therapy and the Neuroscience of Trauma, which is edited by Juliet King and Christianne Strang.

Everyone is welcome! The session is discounted for AATA Members and FREE for AATA Student Members. Attendees may earn 2 CE credits.

ADVOCACY UPDATES
In October, art therapists in Florida were notified by Medical Transport Management (MTM), which manages the Expressive Therapy network for the Sunshine Health Plan under Medicaid, that they will no longer be reimbursed for services. Further, Sunshine Health is ending its relationship with MTM and will directly contract with expressive therapy providers beginning in January 1, 2026. Sunshine Health believes that some expressive therapy providers do not meet their Medicaid requirements, and are mandating that all providers register for a Medicaid ID.

Sunshine Health will hold town hall meetings for providers on Nov. 20 and Dec. 9 to review the updated Medicaid requirements and how to register for a Medicaid ID. [REGISTER FOR THE TOWN HALL

AATA and the Florida Art Therapy Association are monitoring this issue closely. If you are experiencing similar issues in other states (beyond Florida), please let the AATA National Team know at info@arttherapy.org.
