As art therapists face unique developmental challenges throughout their careers, supervision can play a critical role in guiding us through different phases of professional development. In this three-part virtual learning series, presenters Annette Vaccaro, EdD, LPAT, LCSW, SCPsyA, LPC, ATR-BC, ACS, ATCS; Cindy Concannon, LPAT, LPC, ATR-BC, NCC; Dan Summer, Ph.D., LAC, ATR-BC, LCAT, LPAT, ATCS; and Traci Bitondo, PhD, LPC, LPAT, ATR-BC, ACS, ATCS will explore the developmental journey of art therapists, from early-career challenges to more advanced stages, and how supervisors can tailor their approach to meet the evolving needs of their supervisees. Each session will provide an overview of common experiences at different developmental stages, followed by small group discussions and explanations of how to apply this knowledge in clinical supervision. Using the Discrimination Model of Supervision—a well-established developmental framework—we will examine the three key roles a supervisor must navigate: consultant, teacher, and counselor. While the virtual series will be held live via Zoom, with plenty of opportunities to engage with the presenters, it will also be available On Demand to watch at your convenience.

AATA members have told us that they want more opportunities for mentorship and networking—and are signing up to find mentors! That’s why we are looking for more mentors to participate in our Mentor Match program. If you have experience as an art therapist and are willing to support the next generation of art therapists, please join us!  AATA’s Mentor Match program helps mentees connect with mentors through our own specialized search tool. Mentees can search for mentors based on art form specialties, clinical interests, or mentorship goals. From students to seasoned art therapists, we all have something to learn, which is why anyone at any career stage is welcome to be a mentee. Mentors commit to meeting with their mentees at least once a month to ensure mentees get the guidance they need. If you’re curious to learn more about the program we recommend checking out AATA Secretary and Mentor Match Ambassador Michael Galarraga’s 10 Tips to Support a Positive AATA Mentor Match Experience or checking out his tutorial video.

“I am most excited right now about the developmental journey of the art therapist. I have done recent research about the graduates from the program that I coordinate and have been supervising for 20 years now. In addition, I am learning more and more about online education and how to use technology to enhance our training. The pandemic brought the necessity to stretch our wings in this area.” AATA is honored to have Annettee host our upcoming Supervision CE Series. Join her for the virtual sessions beginning March 21. “I think the weight of the world sits with so many right now. It makes me feel incredibly fortunate to be able to process events of race, diversity and social justice with my clients.” Learn more about Ashley Stielow.
