On December 29, 2022, President Biden signed into law the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 which included a slimmed-down version of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Reauthorization Act (VGBA). While the reauthorization didn't include the entire package of programs in H.R. 7787, it was a significant step in the right direction and a victory for drowning prevention. The inclusion of VGBA in the end-of-year omnibus spending bill capped off a months-long advocacy effort by PHTA, which included several meetings with key Congressional offices. Representative Wasserman Shultz intends to refile the legislation in the next Congress, and PHTA looks forward to continuing our advocacy helping make children safer around swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs.
