This year, we are giving you a head start! Entries are being accepted now through July 1. And, we have created categories based on the cost of the pool – so your project will compete against others of similar size and scope!

RESOURCE OF THE WEEK

The PHTA Registered Pool Maintenance and Service Technician Apprenticeship Program is a nationwide program, registered with the U.S. Department of Labor, allowing the pool and spa profession to be more competitive with other industries that are also struggling for entry-level talent. And, because the PHTA apprenticeship program uses industry-developed competency and ANSI-approved standards developed by PHTA, employers and apprentices are assured that the program delivers the content needed to develop qualified service professionals.

By combining paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction, apprentices receive a skills-based education that prepares them for good-paying jobs – and helps you recruit, build, and retain a highly skilled workforce.

The PHTA Apprenticeship Program is FREE for members. Enroll today!

STANDARDS AND CODES
Under conditions of extreme or extended drought that some areas of the U.S. are facing, strict conservation measures may prohibit draining and replacement of pool water. Balancing the need to conserve water with the need to keep pools and pool environments safe and healthy for bathers is a challenge pool operators must address. An RWQC Fact Sheet on Water Conservation During Droughts is now available on the PHTA website. This topic also appears in AQUA Magazine's Tech Notes section in the February 2022 issue.

PHTA Codes staff met with IAPMO staff to discuss proposals to update the Uniform Swimming Pool, Spa, and Hot Tub Code in the current code cycle.

PHTA Codes staff engaged Massachusetts public health officials on behalf of a PHTA member regarding a hot tub retail issue.

  • A hearing was held last week for House Bill 669 (Virginia) in the House Health, Welfare, and Institutions Subcommittee. HB 669 requires the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) to promulgate regulations for the operations, maintenance, and safety of public pools and establishes a workgroup of stakeholders to consult with the VDH on the regulations. The legislation specifically calls for PHTA to be part of the workgroup. PHTA provided oral and written supporting testimony. The bill was amended to the workgroup study and passed out of committee 5-0.
  • A hearing was held for Maryland House Bill 303 before the House Environment and Transportation Committee on February 2. HB 303 would adopt the ISPSC in Maryland statewide. PHTA and the International Code Council provided written and oral testimony as well as supporting witnesses.
  • Senate Bill 319 will convene a hearing before the Maryland Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee on February 10. PHTA and the International Code Council are prepping in advance of the hearing and will provide both written and oral testimony as well as supporting witnesses.
The ADA and ABA Accessibility Standards address independent access to swimming pools and spas. The U.S. Access Board is offering a free webinar on March 3 from 2:30-4 p.m. ET and will review application of these requirements to swimming pools and spas, as well as the technical requirements for pool lifts, sloped entries, transfer steps, transfer walls, and stairs. Additionally, Board staff will address aquatic recreation facilities, such as lazy rivers, wave action pools, and water play components. Presenters will also clarify common sources of confusion about accessible swimming pools and spas.
