PHTA UPDATES
PHTA is keeping its thumb on the pulse of what is happening in our industry NOW. Through our quarterly pulse studies, we are tracking the key factors impacting our members’ success – such as sales volume, backlogs, quotes, profits, number of employees, and current concerns. And, as a benefit of answering 13 questions, each participating member company receives a unique link to a portal in which they can benchmark their performance against other members.
You have until Friday, August 27 to nominate a Service Professional of the Year! We know pool service and maintenance requests have exploded over the last 18 months, and we also know our members have done amazing work to keep up with this demand! Nominate yourself, a coworker, or someone in your network for this prestigious award.
EDUCATION AND EVENTS
Five-time Paralympian Jessica Long will be delivering the keynote presentation at this year's World Aquatic Health Conference (WAHC). Long will be swimming for Team USA in Tokyo this month. “Long’s inspirational story should resonate with everyone in the aquatics industry,” says Sabeena Hickman, CAE, President and CEO of PHTA. “What swimming has done for her—and what she has done for swimming—highlights the importance of our industry and encourages us to strive to make aquatic facilities safe and healthy spaces for all users.”
Join the California Pool & Spa Association (CPSA) today at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT for the free webinar, "How to Protect Your Pool Business and Its Equity Right Now." John Dudek, Benefits Division Leader with Aqualine Insurance Services, and Jack Leavy, Regional Vice President, Business Markets with Principal Financial Group, will walk you through the steps to making sure your business and your equity are adequately protected now and in the future.
Come in early for WAHC and join us for a pre-conference presentation that will provide health officials, planners, and designers an in-depth analysis of how to create a proper construction plan for a successful pool plan review. Presenter John Mason is a registered environmental health specialist working for the public health division at Deschutes County in Bend, OR. He has over 20 year of pool regulatory experience and has been a Certified Pool Operator Instructor since 2006. He'll help you identify tips, tricks, and key communication tools needed to work with your plan review.
PHTA is offering the Certified Pool & Spa Operator (CPO) Certification Class as a pre-conference session at PSP/Deck Expo. This class will teach you to identify code requirements; understand inspection, operation, and maintenance procedures; understand the purpose of the VGBA; understand recreational water illness treatment and prevention; and much more! At the end of the class, you will take the CPO exam on-site.
PHTA is expanding its on-demand course offerings! We've recently added courses to our website covering subjects like business and leadership, design, safety, and water quality. Additional GENESIS® courses and sessions from last year's WAHC are also now available. On-demand courses give you the flexibility to learn on your own schedule while still earning CEUs.
Interested in becoming a CPO (Certified Pool & Spa Operator) Instructor? Plan ahead for 2022 with our virtual and in-person PHTA Instructor Assessment Schools. The next virtual school will be April 11-15, 2022. There will also be an in-person school October 10-12, 2022. STANDARDS AND CODES
The PHTA Technical Committee will meet on August 31 to discuss public comments on relevant code proposals in anticipation of the ICC Public Comment Hearings in September and to discuss PHTA Standards. The New Hampshire State Building Code Review Board approved adoption of the 2018 version of the International Swimming Pool & Spa Code (ISPSC) with seven non-substantive, administrative amendments. Once all codes have been reviewed by the Board for state-specific amendments, the state legislature will approve final adoption. ADVOCACY
PHTA Government Relations (GR) and the ICC convened a meeting with the Maryland Conference of Environmental Health Directors who opposed the adoption of the ISPSC in Maryland. PHTA GR and the ICC successfully mitigated the majority of the concerns from the Conference of Environmental Health Directors. PHTA and the ICC will pursue the adoption of the ISPSC in Maryland for 2022 and have agreed in principle to consider proposed amendments from the Conference of Environmental Health Directors to satisfy their concerns. PHTA GR is attending the Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) 2021 Summer Conference in Ocean City, Maryland. PHTA GR is spending time shoring up support with key Maryland legislators and Governor Larry Hogan’s staff who are attending the conference. PHTA GR and the ICC also have an in-person meeting scheduled with the Ocean City Hotel-Motel-Restaurant-Association, which opposed the 2021 ISPSC adoption in Maryland. Questions or input on any legislative, regulatory, or local matters should be directed to PHTA Director of Government Relations Jason Davidson at jdavidson@phta.org. FOR YOUR BUSINESS
