In Episode 6 of the Step Into Swim Podcast, Rowdy Gaines talks with two-time Olympian and Olympic medalist Lia Neal. The two discuss Lia's history in the sport as well as all the ups and downs of her journey to Olympic medals and an NCAA championship. They also discuss diversity in the sport and Lia's perspective on being the first African-American woman to win an Olympic swimming medal.

Chapters make up the backbone of PHTA, building a bridge with local professional communities; extending exceptional local service to members; and providing support, knowledge, and networking keyed to each member's unique geographic needs. PHTA is interested in restarting or developing chapters in the following regions:
—Pacific Northwest
—South Texas/San Antonio
—Nevada/Las Vegas
—Louisiana
—California
—Colorado

If you are in any of these regions and are interested in being involved in a PHTA Chapter, please send an email to Amy Cannon at acannon@phta.org.

Chapters are vital to member participation at the grassroots level and instrumental in shaping the future of the pool, hot tub, and spa industry. We welcome your participation!

ADVOCACY

The PHTA Government Relations team monitors state and local legislation as well as rulemaking nationwide, advocating around the country and lobbying for legislation and rulemaking that benefits PHTA and its members. Priority issues surround the adoption of the International Swimming Pool & Spa Code (ISPSC), Portable Electric Spa Energy Efficiency via adoption of the APSP-14 Standard, Licensing/Certification/Training, Pool & Hot Tub Safety and Education, Prop 65 in California, as well as other areas. The following are a few highlights:

  • APSP-14, Portable Spa Legislation: The adoption of the APSP-14 Standard for portable electric spas for every state is absolutely critical for the hot tub industry. This standard promotes energy efficiency and creates one standard for manufacturers to follow nationwide. In California, the California Energy Commission (CEC) approved adoption of the 2019 edition and is awaiting final Office of Administrative Law (OAL) approval for it to take effect. In Rhode Island, Governor Daniel McKee signed HB 5966 into law, which will take effect January 1, 2023.
  • International Swimming Pool & Spa Code (ISPSC) Legislation: The adoption of the ISPSC nationwide is a top priority for PHTA. The adoption of the ISPSC nationwide creates a uniform standard, works in conjunction with other international codes currently adopted, and is the most comprehensive standard for swimming pools and spas. In Texas, the Rowlett City Council approved the adoption of the ISPSC.

Questions or input on any legislative, regulatory, or local matters should be directed to Jason Davidson at jdavidson@phta.org.
