PHTA UPDATES
In the latest episode of the Step Into Swim podcast, hosts Rowdy and Sabeena introduce brother and sister act, Michael and Katie Ledecky. Sibling swimmers since childhood, Michael and Katie walk down memory lane to discuss how they fell into swimming, and how the sport has shaped and changed their lives. Katie followed Michael into the pool as a young girl at the age of six years old, and she went on to win 5 Olympic gold medals and 15 world championship gold medals, the most in history for a female swimmer. She is the world record holder in the women's 400-, 800-, and 1500-meter freestyle. She also holds the fastest-ever times in the women's 500-, 1000-, and 1650-yard freestyle events.

Step Into Swim, an initiative of PHTA, has recently distributed $89,590 in grant funds to 22 facilities across the country, directly helping 6,297 children learn to swim. The grants were given to YMCAs, community centers, camps, city parks and rec departments, and other facilities that are teaching swim lessons to youth in their communities. Formal swim lessons reduce the risk of drowning by almost 90%, and Step Into Swim is committed to creating 1 million swimmers. Step Into Swim will continue to fulfill grant requests throughout the summer.
This is a final reminder to those who may be interested in volunteering for PHTA councils or committees! All application forms are due next Tuesday, June 15. Our volunteers deliver the resources, knowledge, connections, and education that enable PHTA members to be stronger, smarter, safer, and therefore more successful. STANDARDS AND CODES
The deadline for the Dr. R. Neil Lowry Grant is this Friday, June 11. The Dr. R. Neil Lowry Grant is a $5,000 grant that honors a public health official or department who has made outstanding contributions to advance the public’s health and safe use of recreational water in pools, spas and waterparks through educational, safety, operational, and technical programs. Grant nominations are accepted from public health officials and entities and from PHTA members. Nominate an outstanding individual or department today!
The User-Consumer interest category is defined as any individual/entity that uses swimming pools, spas, swim spas and hot tubs, or components. This includes but is not limited to homeowners, owners or operators of, or service professionals engaged with swimming pools, spas, swim spas, or hot tubs, or members of consumer and public safety advocate organizations. Please reach out to any member or non-member who you think would serve PHTA in the SCC User-Consumer category. Interested parties may download the SCC Application Form and submit the completed forms to standards@phta.org.
PHTA seeks voting members to serve on the PHTA Glossary Committee. The Glossary Committee is responsible for reviewing and approving all terms and definitions for the PHTA Master Glossary which are used in all American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/PHTA standards. To apply for consideration, please download the Glossary Application Form and return the completed form to standards@phta.org.
PHTA is inviting public review and comments on the revision of the ANSI/APSP/ICC-15 2011 American National Standard for Residential Swimming Pool and Spa Energy Efficiency, also known as the PHTA-15 standard. Public review is an important part of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards consensus development process. PHTA invites all pool and hot tub professionals, as well as non-industry members, to review the draft and submit comments for consideration. All public review comments on the revised PHTA-15 standard are due on Monday, July 19, 2021.
ADVOCACY
The PHTA Government Relations team continues to press on, monitoring state and local legislation as well as rulemaking nationwide. With 48 state legislatures meeting this week, the GR team is currently advocating in 20 states around the country, lobbying for legislation and rulemaking that benefits PHTA and its members. Priority issues surround the adoption of the International Swimming Pool & Spa Code (ISPSC), Portable Electric Spa Energy Efficiency via adoption of the APSP-14 Standard, Licensing/Certification/Training, Pool & Hot Tub Safety and Education, Prop 65 in California, as well as other areas.
