PHTA UPDATES

PHTA is pleased to announce the formation of The Champions Board, a distinguished group of athletes, pool industry professionals, and philanthropists who are committed to drowning prevention. The Champions Board will be the philanthropic arm of PHTA, responsible for raising awareness and funds to make a difference across the country. The board will work closely with PHTA's Step Into Swim initiative, which has the goal of creating 1 million more swimmers—particularly targeting children in underserved areas.

1. Employee morale: What better way to recognize your team than by telling them their project won an international award?

2. Increase visibility: Award winners are honored during the International Pool | Spa | Patio Expo in November. They are also featured on the PHTA website, press releases, social media, and industry trade publications.

3. Marketing: Winners receive a marketing toolkit with customizable press releases, logos, and social media posts to help market your award-winning work and earn invaluable press coverage. This achievement can earn you future customers.

4. Award-winning business: How many companies can claim they are an award-winning business? Your chances of being one of them are greater when you submit a project to our Awards of Excellence.

5. Industry recognition: Be recognized amongst your peers for your inspiring project.

PHTA's Step Into Swim podcast is for anyone who has ever been inspired by a swimmer. It’s for people who are passionate about swimming (swimming enthusiasts) and all the benefits that come from time spent in the water. We’re going to share stories about how swimming has saved, shaped, and changed lives and why drowning prevention is so important.

Looking through a magazine of pools, it is easy to find well-conceived plans that failed to unify the design with proper material and color selections. Color is one of our basic means of communication and it influences our emotions, so it must be understood and controlled. D231: Color Theory and Its Application introduces the basic dynamics of color, its principles, fundamentals, its psychology, and how to apply the science to project design. Class begins June 8.

It's confirmed! GENESIS® and PHTA will be teaching 11 pre-conference schools as part of the PSP/Deck Expo:

  • C201 GENESIS® CONSTRUCTION SCHOOL: Concrete Pools
  • E211: Fluid Hydraulics for Pools & Spas
  • D231: Color Theory & Its Application
  • D271: Architectural Styles
  • D180: Design Communication for Business
  • Pool & Spa Operator® (CPO®) Certification Class
  • PHTA Certified Maintenance Specialist (CMS) Course
  • PHTA Certified Hot Tub Technician (CHTT) Course
  • PHTA Certified Service Technician (CST) Course

  • PHTA | ICC Present the 2021 International Swimming Pool & Spa Code

We're looking forward to seeing our members in-person again in Dallas!

The World Aquatic Health Conference is returning in-person this fall! PHTA is excited to announce that this year's keynote speaker will be 23-time Paralympic medalist Jessica Long. At just 18 months old, Jessica’s legs were amputated below the knee due to a rare bone disorder called fibular hemimelia, but her adopted family would not let her physical differences limit her potential. Now, as one of America's most decorated champions, her work focuses on winning in the water and inspiring others outside the pool.

Other exciting things in store at WAHC include sessions on leadership skills, CPR training, disinfection for healthier swimming, aquatic facility management, and ISPSC reviews.

  • Analysis and Understanding of Source Water: Source water composition can impact overall swimming pool chemistry, and unexpected changes in source water can have large consequences on pool management strategies. This discussion will include the problems associated with using chloraminated water to fill pools, common problems encountered with fill water, and information on testing interferences.

ADVOCACY

The PHTA Government Relations team continues to press on, monitoring state and local legislation as well as rulemaking nationwide. With 48 state legislatures meeting this week, the GR team is currently advocating in 20 states around the country, lobbying for legislation and rulemaking that benefits PHTA and its members. Priority issues surround the adoption of the International Swimming Pool & Spa Code (ISPSC), Portable Electric Spa Energy Efficiency via adoption of the APSP-14 Standard, Licensing/Certification/Training, Pool & Hot Tub Safety and Education, Prop 65 in California, as well as other areas. The following are a few highlights:

  • APSP-14, Portable Spa Legislation: The adoption of the APSP-14 Standard for portable electric spas for every state is absolutely critical for the hot tub industry. This standard promotes energy efficiency and creates one standard for manufacturers to follow nationwide. In California, the California Energy Commission submitted a proposal to amend regulations to require portable electric spas to meet the requirements of the APSP-14 standard. A public hearing will be held on June 29 at 10am PT. Public comment is due no later than June 28. In Oregon, HB 2062 (sponsored by Governor Kate Brown) was passed out of the Senate Energy and Environment Committee and the full Senate. HB 2062 has been referred to Governor Brown for signature.
*Note: The standards for portable electric spas proposed by HB 2062 were submitted through the rulemaking process on August 28, 2020, by the Oregon Department of Energy. The rule changes will become effective on September 1, 2021.

  • International Swimming Pool & Spa Code (ISPSC) Legislation: The adoption of the ISPSC nationwide is a top priority by PHTA. The adoption of the ISPSC nationwide creates a uniform standard, works in conjunction with other international codes currently adopted, and is the most comprehensive standard for swimming pools and spas. In Texas, HB 2205 had a hearing in the Senate Business and Commerce Committee. HB 2205 would require the State Department of Health Services to comply with the ISPSC and allow the Department to adopt the ISPSC by reference through the rulemaking process. PHTA GR engaged in last-minute amendments to satisfy the Apartment Association.

Questions or input on any legislative, regulatory, or local matters should be directed to Jason Davidson at jdavidson@phta.org.
