The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Reauthorization Act (VGBA) continues to gain support in both the House and Senate. PHTA has endorsed the bill, which seeks to reauthorize and update 2008 legislation requiring every public pool in the US to install safe drain covers that prevent suction entrapment.

The bill has gained support since being introduced on May 24, in both the House (H.R. 7877) by Reps. Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) and Carter (R-TX) and in the Senate (S. 4296) by Sens. Klobuchar (D-MN) and Blunt (R-MO). The House bill has 10 cosponsors and the Senate added Sen. Blumenthal (D-CT) as a supporter. PHTA has met with staff for Rep. Wasserman Schultz as well as Sen. Klobuchar to get advice on how to help increase support for the bill, including which offices we should target for additional cosponsor support. We have also started meetings with House members who serve on the Energy and Commerce Committee to ask for their support.
