Maybe you’re a new homeowner building a deck or fence, or maybe you’re like me, replacing a 35-year-old fence that lost its last battle with that crazy June windstorm. No matter what your outdoor project might be, and no matter where you live – the suburbs, the city or in a rural community – you need to plan your work and work your plan.

Today, most meetings begin with a ‘Safety Moment’; a short info-bit promoting safety awareness that resonates with everyone. It could be as simple as ensuring your vehicle’s windshield washer fluid is full before a long drive or promoting enhanced awareness of school zone speed limits. There truly is an endless list of safety topics to choose from but, when you’re put on the spot to present one, you’ll often find none come to mind!

Fundamentally, we wanted to determine why, in the year 2023, a segment of our homeowner users preferred to call in by phone (which of course, means potentially waiting on hold, risking a less accurate locate request, and taking longer than two minutes to process) rather than placing their request on our website. To sweeten the pot, we also had a draw for a fabulous LED TV at the end of the survey window.

Changing the name and rebranding a longstanding service isn’t an easy task and two years after the big change, Albertans still refer to us as Alberta One-Call, Alberta First Call and one of my favourites, “Alberta One” (or maybe it's “Alberta 1”?), which doesn’t make much sense to me.

You can literally find a podcast on any topic today and when a big part of your business is promoting awareness, just dipping your toe in the expanding ocean of podcasts isn’t enough. Doug Downs convinced me of that.

Approximately 850 individual buried utility companies have registered the location of their buried assets with Utility Safety Partners but only provincial and federal transmission pipeline regulators – the Alberta Energy Regulator and the Canada Energy Regulator – require registering those governed pipelines with Utility Safety Partners. All other buried utility operators register their assets with USP voluntarily.

1984 was a historic year, and not in the unsettling way George Orwell predicted. Bruce McCandless floated freely in space when he made the first untethered spacewalk. Apple released its first Macintosh personal computer, revolutionizing the tech industry. Alex Trebek debuted as Jeopardy!’s host and quickly won the hearts of millions of viewers. And let’s not forget – the Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup!
