Utility Safety Partners (USP) is excited to announce the release of the Damage Prevention Process – Homeowner Edition, a practical new guide designed specifically to help homeowners dig safely in their yards and on adjacent land. Developed by the USP Best Practices Committee.
This new publication is a simplified version of the more comprehensive Damage Prevention Process in Alberta and is tailored to the needs of homeowners undertaking common outdoor projects. Whether you're planting a tree, installing a fence, excavating for a deck, or running utilities to a shed, this guide provides essential safety best practices to help avoid damaging buried infrastructure and prevent potentially serious consequences.
The homeowner edition reinforces USP’s ongoing mission: to keep people, the environment, and critical utilities safe through education, awareness, and public engagement. As Alberta's trusted resource for utility safety, USP continues to support safe digging practices through accessible tools and clear guidance.
Remember, a ground disturbance is any action that moves or removes earth — regardless of depth. If your project involves digging of any kind, it’s important to know what’s below before you begin. This guide walks homeowners through the steps they need to take before and during their projects, emphasizing the importance of requesting locates and understanding the roles of utility owners.
