Comprehensive Damage Prevention Legislation – Round 2

Thank you to everyone who took the time to review draft damage prevention legislation posted to the Utility Safety Partners website last month. The comments are now under review and will help develop the second draft, which will be posted to the USP website sometime in May. Once posted, the second draft will remain on the site for a 30-day comment period. Comments on the second draft will be reviewed and help develop the third and final draft, which will be delivered to the United Conservative Party for its consideration.

One of the main goals of the legislation development process is transparency. To that end, all comments received will be posted with the updated legislation drafts. Those comments that helped revise the legislation will be incorporated into the posted draft and those that did not will be responded to accordingly.

It’s important to once again note the stellar work done by the former Alberta Common Ground Alliance in this space. Guided by its Executive Director, Michelle Tetreault, the ABCGA secured all party support for Bill 211 – the Alberta Underground Infrastructure Notification System Act. The bill was referred to the Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship, which released its report recommending the bill proceed. However, once the provincial election was called in 2019, the bill didn’t move further.
