Can Clean and Soiled Textiles be transported in the same vehicle? Do textiles have to be covered when on a cart in the hospital? What is the proper airflow for my linen storage room? Is my soil sort team required to wear shoe coverings?

The answers to these types of questions come from a litany of sources, including standards and guidelines published by (but not limited to) AAMI, the CDC, and OSHA, as well as from recommended practices developed by organizations such as APIC and AORN. Additionally, some states may have regulations that are above and beyond the requirements of the above recognized bodies. Researching all the different standards, guidelines, and regulations to know which applies in every situation is an extensive job, but ALM has an online tool available to replace hours of research!

A laundry is a complex operation. One key challenge of that complexity is the risk of waste going overlooked. Operators must contend with many ways that their laundries can work at less than optimum efficiency. Consequently, it takes savvy and diligence to identify waste and take the appropriate steps to realize cost savings.

"There are millions of moving parts in a laundry, and you have to make sure all those parts are moving as efficiently as possible, and they’re all moving in the right direction," said Graham Skinner, RLLD, vice president of business and technical support, UNX-Christeyns.

Experts point to labor, linen replacement and utilities as some of the largest costs in a laundry and consequently, the chief areas where operators can cut waste and find savings. For operators, the search to cut costs and maximize efficiency is a challenging but crucial effort, one that requires a keen understanding of where waste can occur and an unwavering determination to find it and fix it.

A huge thank you to TRSA for their advocacy efforts on reusable textiles and the recent Introduction of a bill in New York! TRSA has been pushing for legislation to address healthcare employee safety concerns raised during the height of the pandemic as well as reduce the amount of waste healthcare facilities are sending to landfills. Rarely does legislation get introduced in both chambers of the legislature, as it normally originates in one chamber.

“LAVATEC machines are built so the maintenance is simple and easy, and we keep track of each and every part. We also have a preventive maintenance policy in place to replace any sensitive parts prior to them breaking down,” said Vinny Samuel, president and co-owner of JVK Operations with Mike Connell.

When the need arises, Samuel says he and his staff are confident in LAVATEC’s abilities to resolve any issues and makes for a strong partnership.

“Commercial laundry businesses do not attract highly educated engineers or technical personnel. It is a struggle for every laundry with the issue of retaining knowledgeable employees because they are in such high demand. That’s why it is important that LAVATEC’s equipment is simple to maintain, and the training for our operators and technicians is helpful and fairly easy.”
