Industry News

Like in many workplace environments, increased focus on overheating during summer months is important in a laundry. When the human body is unable to maintain a normal temperature, heat illnesses can occur and may even result in death. It is also important to consider that hot work environments may exist indoors as well as outdoors.

OSHA recognized July's anniversary of a worker's death due to hyperthermia on their site and urges employers to keep all workers safe.

OSHA's fact sheet provides information to employers on measures they should take to prevent worker illnesses and death caused by heat stress.

OSHA also has numerous other heat safety tools and information available at no cost for employers and workers, including a heat safety app for Android and iPhone devices at www.osha.gov/heat.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced that it will publish a notice in the Federal Register to extend the comment period for the COVID-19 healthcare emergency temporary standard (ETS) to August 20, 2021.

OSHA is extending the comment period by 30 days to allow stakeholders additional time to review the ETS and collect information and data necessary for comment.

Comments can be submitted electronically for Docket No. OSHA-2020-0004 via the Federal eRulemaking Portal at www.regulations.gov. Follow the online instructions for making electronic submissions.

Career Opportunities

Many healthcare laundries are finding themselves in need of more staff, given the increased demands on hospitals. If you are a laundry with available positions, please post job details in the ALM Career Center! The ALM Career Center allows anyone to search available openings or résumés and subscribe to updates, and ALM members may submit openings and upload their résumés for free.

The ALM Career Center is available under Resources, Career Center.

Healthcare Linen Services Group (St. Charles, IL) is proud to receive the “Top 50 Healthcare Companies” award from the International Forum for Advancements in Healthcare (IFAH). This prestigious award was announced during IFAH Vegas Conference on June 23–25, 2021.

“We are honored to be recognized as one of the top 50 healthcare services companies by the foundation this year. Every day our essential team members deliver mission-critical products and services without fail and their deeds often can go unnoticed — this award is for them,” stated Joseph LaPorta, President and CEO of HLSG.

Linen King, a leading provider of healthcare laundry services in the south and central United States, recently announced changes to its senior leadership team.

Chris Corcoran, current chief operating officer for Linen King, will succeed Leonard McCullough as chief executive officer, effective immediately. Leonard will remain with the company in the role of executive in residence, providing continued support to the senior leadership team and the board of directors.

After 48 years in linen services, Don Kotek is looking forward to enjoying a life of retirement. Don, most recently SWWI Linen Services Supervisor at Mayo Clinic Health System, Franciscan Healthcare on the La Crosse (WI) Campus, has been an advocate of laundry and linen services throughout his career.

Vicky Vessey of Textile Care Services notes that Don is the last of the "founding fathers" that initiated the ALM Upper Mississippi Valley Chapter and one of the most steadfast laundry leaders we have had in our industry, in addition to being a pleasure to work with over the years.

Co-worker and colleague Cindy Molko recalls that Don was always the first one to arrive at all the meetings and colleagues always enjoyed his welcoming smile and great stories. She adds that she will miss those things and truly appreciated his support and guidance when she became involved in the industry.

Congratulations on the retirement, Don!

2021 is a special year for TQI LLC, or Tecni-Quip, as they are celebrating their 60th year in business as a family-owned and managed company.

Founders Charles and Jane Clement served their country during World War II; Charles as an Army captain and Jane employed as a Civil Service Secretary for the War Department. They met while deployed in the Panama Canal Zone in 1944 and were soon married. In 1950, as so many G.I.s did, they moved to the Los Angeles area where Jane worked as an executive secretary to a Fortune 500 company and Charles (with the help of the G.I. Bill) pursued his degree in aeronautical engineering.

In 1961, not satisfied with designing aircraft and working for large companies, Jane and Charles became entrepreneurs and founded Tecni-Quip, in a borrowed garage filled with tools, a drafting board and many dreams. Within a few years, they were designing and building linen carts for local Los Angeles-area hospitals. Soon, Charles was traveling with carts in tow up and down the West Coast while Jane maintained the office and staff.
