All healthcare laundries, in compliance with OSHA guidelines for Bloodborne Pathogens, have at least one red container in their laundry — the “sharps container.”

Apparently these devices have joined toilet paper on shortage lists! Due to the increased need for sharps containers at COVID-19 vaccination sites, a growing shortage of the containersis developing for other service areas. The CDC recently released guidance on managing this latest COVID disruption.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recommending health care personnel and facilities transition away from crisis capacity conservation strategies, such as decontaminating or bioburden reducing disposable respirators for reuse. Based on the increased domestic supply of new respirators approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) currently available to facilitate this transition, the FDA and CDC believe there is adequate supply of respirators to transition away from use of decontamination and bioburden reduction systems.

The FDA and CDC believe there is adequate supply of respirators to transition away from use of decontamination and bioburden reduction systems. However, the FDA is not revoking the EUAs for decontamination and bioburden reduction systems at this time. While there is an increase in domestic supply of respirators for healthcare personnel, the FDA will continue to monitor supply and demand to assess respirator availability as facilities systematically transition away from the most extreme measures of respirator conservation (that is, crisis capacity strategies) to contingency and eventually conventional use. Therefore, respirators, specifically surgical respirators, presently remain on the FDA’s device shortage list.

This month, we celebrate Laundry & Linen Week, April 26 through 30, and we want to know about who on your team has stepped up over the last year! Share stories of colleagues who went above and beyond, either due to COVID-19 or just because they are simply that kind of person.

ALM staff will choose our four favorite submissions to share on Facebook and LinkedIn during Laundry & Linen Week, but all submissions will be available on the Laundry & Linen Week page of our website. If you are unable to share details about a person or location due to privacy restrictions, we are happy to list any as anonymous, so don't let that stop you from sharing! All of you in the textile care industry are very much unsung heroes, no matter your responsibilities, in keeping everyone safe with clean, quality linen. Let's change that and have you recognized!

Submission Deadline

Email the story, including a headshot of the person if possible, to Nicole Morris at nmorris@ALMnet.org, no later than 5 p.m. ET on Monday, April 19.

Registration is now open for both 2021 sessions of ALM's Laundry & Linen College, the premier resource for laundry training and education. For over 30 years, the college has provided training in laundry processing and linen management for individuals in the U.S. and abroad.

UPDATE ON 2021 LAUNDRY & LINEN COLLEGE PLANS

Plans are moving forward to hold the Laundry & Linen College as an in-person program for both Textile Care Services and Laundry Processing & Operations.

If conditions make it impossible for the program to be held in-person, it will be shifted to a virtual format and will follow an altered schedule, where no more than 4 hours per day are spent in online classes. In the event this occurs, registrations will be transferred to the virtual format. If the participant is unable to participate in the alternate schedule, refunds will be granted. Hotel reservations at the host hotel, TownPlace Suites Marriott, may be canceled without penalty up to 24 hours prior to arrival.

When your staff attend a session of ALM's Laundry & Linen College, your facility will benefit! Register now!

Reusable mattress barriers have emerged as a possible solution to a headache faced by hospitals when cleaning and disinfecting mattresses.

These launderable products could lengthen mattress life, as an alternative to using chemical products on the mattress itself. Explore barrier benefits for your customers and as a potential new business line offered by your laundry.

Join us with Dr. Edward Hooker for Exploring a Reusable Mattress Barrier Program on Thursday, April 29, at 2 p.m. ET.

Keep in mind, you are allowed an unlimited number of participants at your location for the same low price!

This webinar is proudly sponsored by MIP Inc., the softer side of healthcare.

The U.S. Department of Labor announced the award of $725,000 in grants to seven states and territories, and the District of Columbia, to expand their fidelity bonding programs, which support employers that hire workers considered “at-risk” due to prior involvement in the criminal justice system, as well as those in recovery for substance abuse. These workers often face barriers in their attempts to return to the workforce.
