2017 State Government Network (SGN) Meeting Recap

They say that you don’t know what you don’t know. After my first State Government Network (SGN) annual meeting in St. Louis last week, I can certainly confirm that sentiment. I have spent the past 12 years contributing to Georgia’s grassroots legislative efforts, and I think there is a strong tendency for most members to believe that legislative efforts on the state level are unique to each state. What became immediately clear during the meeting’s orientation was that very little of our state-level legislative efforts are solitary and their consequences are quickly felt within other states.

AIA Atlanta’s 2017 Residential Design Awards

AIA Atlanta’s annual Residential Design Awards (RDA) return for a fourth year, honoring excellence in work built by AIA members and architects registered in Georgia (this competition is statewide). Registration and submissions are open June 22 through October 27. On November 16, we will announce the winners during Build Something Great at Midtown’s Summerour Studio.

AIA Office RFQ Closes MONDAY!

AIA Atlanta and Georgia have issued our RFQ for design services for our new space. The full description of the requirements and the submissions will be through the AIA Georgia website. The process will be a true qualification based selection (QBS) process and not a design competition. We certainly hope to receive a high quality and diverse group of responses. Due to the nature of our expedited move, our search for a designer will be a very quick and thorough process, with final the final qualifications package due Monday, April 3.

AIA Georgia Design Awards People's Choice Voting NOW OPEN

It is our yearly tradition to hold open voting for the general public to bestow the People's Choice Award for their favorite project in each category. April 6, 2017 -- This course is a review of the electrical requirements of the 2015 IECC and ASHRAE 90.1-2013. Topics include lighting, lighting control, air barriers, appliance efficiency, automatic receptacle control, electrical submetering and energy monitoring. AIA Georgia Design Awards Call for Entries Now Open!

AIA Georgia will celebrate Excellence in Design to end National Architecture Week, April 9-15, 2017. The Design and Honor Awards presentation will be held on April 15, 2017, from 6-9 p.m. at the Ponce City Market Rooftop Venue! The Call for Entries is now open and includes new categories. We have also changed the submission process to a two-part system. Please submit your best works for consideration this year! Submission deadline is March 3rd at 6pm. Early Bird ends February 24th.

WEBINAR: AIA Georgia Discussion Of Georgia Energy Code

Please join us for an informal discussion of the Georgia Energy Code on February 16th at 4pm during which Ryan Taylor will present an overview of the ongoing process for amending and adopting Georgia’s next energy code. This will not be a structured continuing education program so Ryan can solicit comments from AIA GA members to take to the next meeting of the Georgia Energy Code Task Force on the following Thursday. It will be helpful for those attending to review the 2015 IECC, particularly Chapter 4 in the commercial section of the code, in advance to bring comments and questions to the discussion.

With a Republican Congress and White House, we are watching closely to determine what this could mean for public policy in Georgia. With 2016 being an election year, there were a number of issues that were not taken up, as they did not play well in election-year politics. Look up the bills we are watching and/or sponsoring. AIA Georgia will celebrate Excellence in Design to end National Architecture Week, April 9-15, 2017. The Design and Honor Awards presentation will be held on April 15, 2017, from 6-9 p.m. at the Ponce City Market Rooftop Venue! The Call for Entries is now open and includes new categories. We have also changed the submission process to a two-part system. Please submit your best works for consideration this year!

New legislation has been filed regarding SCAD and licensing and another for structural engineers that affects architects in the State. In 2016, we saw the political world turned upside down. With the election of President – Elect Donald Trump, history was made. Most pundits and political observers were taken by surprise. With a Republican Congress and White House, we are watching closely to determine what this could mean for public policy in Georgia. With 2016 being an election year, there were a number of issues that were not taken up, as they did not play well in election-year politics. AIA Georgia is now accepting nominations for the next Regional Associate Director (RAD) to represent the South Atlantic Region (SAR) from January 2017 to December 2018. This position is important to all AIA Georgia members, but of particular interest to our members who have not yet achieved licensure, or who have decided not to. Deadline for nominations and self-nominations is tomorrow, November 11th.

AIA Georgia’s Equity in Architecture is a new initiative that expands upon AIA Atlanta NetWorking Women’s progress over the years. EQiA will foster a state-wide advancement of women in architecture so that all those entering or currently practicing in the field of architecture can become leaders in a profession that exemplifies the benefits of equitable practice. Our goals for 2017 are ambitious, and we won’t be able to achieve them without the help of a state-wide steering committee. EQiA is seeking 10-12 members to join this committee. We welcome men and women, architects and non-architects from all parts of the state. Committee members would be obligated to 6 meetings per year (1 every other month) as well as championing an initiative of their choice. We hope everyone will consider being part of this newly expanded initiative.

We had enthusiastic participation in our bylaws discussion, but were not able to meet the 100 vote threshold in our current bylaws that allows the membership to make changes to the bylaws. The membership meeting remains officially open so that more members can participate, and will include two Open House events in early November that will provide members the opportunity to hear about the proposed changes, to ask questions in person of AIA leadership and, if they wish, to vote on the changes. Submissions are now open for URBANfronts, returning for a fourth year this September 22nd. This year’s theme is the "Intersection of Nature and Technology." The impact of the built environment we have created has now overcome the resilience of the natural ecosystems we depend on. URBANfronts will now explore the intersection of technology and nature through creative investigations of art, architecture and performing arts.

Sarah Hobbs exhibition: ‘Interior States’

SCAD presents "Interior States," an exhibition by photographer Sarah Hobbs. Hobbs says of her practice, "The viewer is not merely a visitor but is called to participate in completing the work through identifying or sympathizing with the image." Hobbs assembles complex installations in private spaces, such as domestic interiors, hotel rooms and self-storage facilities. These installations wryly portray psychological traits, and Hobbs exaggerates familiar emotions, such as indecisiveness, perfectionism, denial or escapism. She photographs her installations, producing images that are simultaneously absurd and darkly humorous, and are primarily printed in large formats to invite the viewer to "enter" the space. The photographs in "Interior States" were created between 1999 and 2016, and the exhibition is a concise survey of Hobbs’ photographic works to date. Now through Sunday, Sept 24th.

Ryan Gravel, AIA named Judy Turner Prize Inaugural Winner

"The AJC Decatur Book Festival has announced that Ryan Gravel, creator of the Atlanta BeltLine and author of Where We Want to Live: Reclaiming Infrastructure for a New Generation of Cities, has been named first-ever winner of the Judy Turner Prize. Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt Exhibition: ‘A Poem in the Form of Flowers’

The SCAD Museum of Art presents "A Poem in the Form of Flowers," an exhibition by Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt, a collaborative architectural and multidisciplinary practice, R&R Studios, weaving together visual arts, exhibitions, design, architecture and urban design. Responding to the architecture of the SCAD Museum of Art, Behar and Marquardt present a site-specific installation that transforms and engages the façade of the museum. Each of the four Jewel Boxes contains a letter manufactured from colorful artificial flowers, collectively spelling out the word "poem." Referencing commemorative practices, the installation, "A Poem in the Form of Flowers," can be read as both an offering and a celebration. Now through Sunday, Sept 4th.
