Preserving the Bell Building in Downtown Atlanta

In the 2015 legislative session, AIA Georgia was successful in getting one of our highest priority issues written into law – Historic Building Tax Credits.  Click here to learn more about that success.

Protecting older, quality-designed buildings is an important role of AIA Georgia and our interested members, and we have recently partnered with AIA Atlanta and signaled our support for efforts to protect and repurpose the Bell Building in downtown Atlanta.  This classic structure is currently owned by the Georgia State University Foundation, and their short term plan is to demolish the building and build a parking deck.

AIA Georgia and AIA Atlanta delivered a letter last week to Brad Ferrar, the chair of the Foundation, offering to work with them and GSU to plan and execute a community charette that would investigate other, better options for the future of the Bell Building.   Our offer to provide solutions has already garnered coverage in the Saporta Report, and perhaps more media in the coming days and weeks.

Click here to view that letter, and to see how you might get involved in historic preservation efforts like this.
