Happy New Year! As we step into 2024, it is with great excitement and anticipation that we look forward to the innovative and enriching experiences in store for you at the Association for Healthcare Value Analysis Professionals (AHVAP).
As we stand at the threshold of a brand-new year, it is a perfect time to reflect on our AHVAP past and set our sights on our AHVAP future using courage and vision. The canvas of the upcoming year is blank, awaiting the strokes of our vision and dreams. To navigate this uncharted territory with resilience and purpose, let us embrace the twin virtues of vision and courage.
In the ever-evolving field of healthcare, innovation is not just a buzzword; it's the lifeblood that drives us forward. At the Association of Healthcare Value Analysis Professionals (AHVAP), we recognize and celebrate the pivotal role of innovation in our collective journey toward excellence. It’s the pure essence of advancing our specialty across the healthcare continuum.
As we step into the hope and optimism of 2024, I couldn’t help but reflect on AHVAP’s November Professional Edge Book Club where we discussed the book “Primary Greatness” by Stephen R Covey. In this insightful book, the author spoke about the vast amount of time during a week we “do productive things” such as writing a report, creating a presentation, or preparing a financial analysis. However, how much time during the week do we invest in our abilities that can make us more productive or successful at these tasks?
Build a more resilient supply chain
ECRI Institute®
Ongoing shortages of critical medical devices highlight problems with the current “just in time” global supply chain model and the impact of local inventory on patient care. Building a resilient supply chain addresses these issues. To be successful, leaders need expert advice on how to navigate out-of-stock situations, evaluate and minimize category risk, and diversify for resiliency, which will ultimately drive an HRO model.

AHVAP Education
As we wind down 2023, I am excited to share with you an exciting new Position Statement that is now available for both AHVAP members and the general public: Becoming a Strategic Industry Partner. This newly developed and released document was designed to help define the important role that Industry Partners play in the delivery of healthcare and also differentiate between Industry Partners and Medical Vendors. We recommend that you broadly share this new document with your leadership team to educate them about our specialty. If you are not already board certified in healthcare value analysis, now is the time to seek your CVAHP™ certification or one of the AHVAP Certification Center's new micro-certifications.
AHVAP Spotlight

In December, AHVAP experienced another "first" as part of our five-year strategic plan. For the past three days, AHVAP and GHX have jointly presented a poster presentation at the 2023 Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Annual Forum Conference in Orlando, Florida. Attendees at this event hailed from over 63 countries and ranged from Chief Executive Officers to Vice Presidents of Quality and Patient Safety from across the entire healthcare continuum.

Supply Chain Brain
As we enter the end-of-year holiday shipping surge, logistics providers, shippers and receivers are busier than ever. The increased volume of shipments, combined with unpredictable and disruptive weather, strains transportation and logistics networks, and can mean shipping delays, longer lead times and higher shipment costs.

Health Data Management
Traditionally, data and analytics have been an area where healthcare has played catch-up with other industries. It wasn't until about a decade ago that patient "big data" came onto the forefront, ushering in new ways to identify correlations, manage populations and measure outcomes. We're now entering a new era of healthcare analytics in which clinician big data joins industry efforts to address some of the most significant healthcare challenges, like workforce shortages and clinician burnout.

The U.S. health system is responsible for 8.5% of the carbon emissions in the country. While a bulk of those emissions can be linked to supply-chain production, the substantial impact on the environment cannot be ignored. That is why the National Academy of Medicine created the Action Collaborative on Decarbonizing the U.S. Health Sector, a public-private partnership focused on addressing medicine’s environmental impact and strengthening sustainability efforts.
