AHVAP Monthly eNews
Leadership
I hope you all ended the summer on a good note with some last-minute vacations and relaxation. Most of us are back to our routine schedules with the kids back in school again. Wow! How quickly the summer has ended, but the intense heat is still around, reminding us that Mother Earth is not very happy with us.
In a rapidly changing world, where industries are constantly evolving, standing out as a professional association has become a challenge. I recently had the opportunity to attend a nonprofit executive forum with leaders from nonprofits from across the globe. I left this forum feeling invigorated by all of the truly innovative work being done within AHVAP based on the leadership of our Board of Directors and Management Team. AHVAP is fortunate to be growing at a rapid pace when many other nonprofit organizations are experiencing significant declines in membership and engagement.
In preparation for my Courage presentation during our upcoming conference, I am currently reading an enjoyable book by Ryan Holiday, “Courage is Calling.” In the chapter, “Call We Answer,” he tells in great detail the story of a very brave man in history, Charles de Gaulle. He speaks of the courage de Gaulle used to work with Churchill and France. He reflects on Churchill’s description of de Gaulle as “a man that cuts through the noise, he reminds us of what we signed up for.”
And just like that, summer is over! I hope you took time to unwind and recharge as we head into Fall. This is an exciting time as our Annual Conference and Industry Partner Expo is scheduled for September 25 – 28th at the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, TX. If you are coming to the conference, please make sure you download the WHOVA® app – instructions were sent to attendees by email from AHVAP HQ. It is a great way to interact with colleagues and build your network.
I am pleased to report the results of the recent Board of Directors election that concluded this past weekend.
Build a more resilient supply chain
ECRI Institute®
Ongoing shortages of critical medical devices highlight problems with the current “just in time” global supply chain model and the impact of local inventory on patient care. Building a resilient supply chain addresses these issues. To be successful, leaders need expert advice on how to navigate out-of-stock situations, evaluate and minimize category risk, and diversify for resiliency, which will ultimately drive an HRO model.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) released the results of a member survey to assess the severity of these shortages. Drug shortages are nothing new, but results from more than 1,000 pharmacists suggest that the current crisis is particularly concerning. More than 99% of respondents, nearly all of them pharmacists who work for hospitals or health systems, reported that they were facing drug shortages.

After 10 years since initially becoming law, the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) will be fully implemented come November. Manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies must be ready to comply with federal regulations by that time, forgoing the patchwork of state requirements that have long been the industry standards.
Value-based care doesn’t stop at discharge
Molnlycke Health Care®
As the healthcare industry embraces a value-based care model, it’s time for Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs) to reimagine patient transitions throughout the continuum of care. Lack of
standardization between acute and post-acute care creates opportunity for failure points and worsened patient outcomes. By promoting communication, coordination, and consistency of care in each step of the patient journey, IDNs can maximize total value and achieve improved outcomes across the board.

It's all hands on deck for Hawaii's healthcare workers, who have mobilized in the aftermath of the Maui wildfires. Healthcare workers in Hawaii and elsewhere are heeding a call for help after the horrific wildfires that erupted Aug. 8 left thousands homeless and resulted in a death toll of more than 100 and growing. These needs are expected to grow in the weeks and months to come.

The newest federal court ruling on abortion pills is gaining attention for one judge’s unorthodox argument — one that equated anti-abortion activists to wildlife lovers. Judge James Ho of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, writing separately from his two colleagues on a three-judge panel, borrowed from environmental case law to contend that medical providers challenging abortion care suffer “aesthetic injury from the destruction of unborn life.”

Mount Sinai is among a group of elite hospitals pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into AI software and education, turning their institutions into laboratories for this technology. They’re buoyed by a growing body of scientific literature, such as a recent study finding AI readings of mammograms detected 20 percent more cases of breast cancer than radiologists — along with the conviction that AI is the future of medicine.

There were fewer total healthcare data breaches reported in the first six months of 2023 than in the back half of 2022, however, the scale of individual breaches has gotten bigger, according to a recent report from cybersecurity firm Critical Insight. This year, 40 million people have been impacted by healthcare data breaches — the highest number the consultancy firm has observed since it began collecting data on breaches.
