Leadership
In today's dynamic and fast-paced world, professionals from all walks of life are constantly seeking ways to elevate their careers, improve their skills, and stay ahead of the competition. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by stepping outside of one's comfort zone.
Spring is in full bloom! The month of April is a beautiful time of year. It gives way to new beginnings and tends to revitalize us all when the warm weather starts to return. I hope you all have a chance to spend relaxing time with family and friends during Spring Break.
As spring approaches and our trees and flowers are beginning their new growth, I can’t help but compare this to AHVAP. During the winter season, trees and flowers strengthen their roots systems to support and allow new growth and blooming in the spring. This compares to our AHVAP new growth and “blooming.” Our roots have supplied a foundation that supports our remarkable new membership growth, certification growth, and amazing new member programs. You will also not want to miss the exciting new future programs for AHVAP members.
The Board of Directors (BOD) plays a crucial role in developing an organization's strategic plan. This process is critical for success, and it involves assessing strengths and weaknesses, identifying opportunities, and mitigating threats to achieve long-term goals. AHVAP's BOD recently participated in this yearly exercise, and it started with an essential step: SWOT analysis.
Build a more resilient supply chain
ECRI Institute®
Ongoing shortages of critical medical devices highlight problems with the current “just in time” global supply chain model and the impact of local inventory on patient care. Building a resilient supply chain addresses these issues. To be successful, leaders need expert advice on how to navigate out-of-stock situations, evaluate and minimize category risk, and diversify for resiliency, which will ultimately drive an HRO model.

Fast Company
For Johns Hopkins Medicine, a world-renowned patient care, research and teaching institution, the early days of the pandemic were focused on the flow of personal protective equipment—in fleeting supply worldwide. Like many health systems across the country, they had to think creatively to source these vital supplies. When hand sanitizer became scarce, a Baltimore distiller shifted from whisky production to fill the gap.

With drug shortages becoming increasingly common and drawn-out affairs in the U.S., House Republicans are pressing the FDA for answers. At the heart of the investigation is whether the FDA has done enough to prevent and respond to the current spate of shortfalls, which have affected cancer meds and nonprescription painkillers alike.
Value-based care doesn’t stop at discharge
Molnlycke Health Care®
As the healthcare industry embraces a value-based care model, it’s time for Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs) to reimagine patient transitions throughout the continuum of care. Lack of
standardization between acute and post-acute care creates opportunity for failure points and worsened patient outcomes. By promoting communication, coordination, and consistency of care in each step of the patient journey, IDNs can maximize total value and achieve improved outcomes across the board.

Supply Chain Dive
The FDA’s medical device shortage page as of December 2022 listed 16 supply disruptions that were forecast to last for the duration of the COVID-19 public health emergency. With the U.S. government set to end the public health emergency in May, the regulator has revised its forecasts for most of the products. The FDA now predicts the supply of multitarget respiratory specimen nucleic acid tests, micropipettes, microbiological specimen collection devices and other products used in response to the pandemic will return to normal in the first half of the year.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it is requesting $7.2 billion as part of the president’s fiscal year (FY) 2024 budget. This funding will allow the agency to continue to leverage new and emerging technologies, recruit and support a highly skilled workforce and adapt oversight to new production and business models. This is work that will have an immediate impact on food, tobacco and medical product safety in this country while also preparing the agency to address rapid innovation across the food and medical products fields

Hospitals are seeing a bit more consistency in their financial performance, but that’s not necessarily good news. Health systems saw a slight drop in operating margins in February, according to the latest National Hospital Flash Report from Kaufman Hall, a healthcare consulting firm. The median year-to-date operating margin index for hospitals was -1.1% in February, down from -0.8% in January. Hospitals can expect to see flat margins in the foreseeable future, Kaufman Hall projects.

In January, the Federal Trade Commission proposed a rule prohibiting noncompete clauses in employment contracts. The proposed rule would prohibit employment contract provisions that block employees or contractors from working for a competing employer when they move on, or from starting a competing business. Such contracts typically bar people from working within a certain geographic area for a period after the job ends.
