AHVAP Monthly eNews
Leadership
Fall is here, the season is set to change, and I am sure each of you had a chance to relax on Labor Day. As we paid tribute to the contributions and achievements of our workers, I hope you took some time to spend it with family and friends reflecting on how your value analysis work makes a positive impact on the overall performance of each of your organizations and on America.

It has come to our attention that multiple phishing scam emails from an Event Attendee Specialist from Dallas, Texas, using the AHVAP logo is inquiring with our members regarding the annual conference attendee list. Please be aware that this is a scam. We advise that you do not open this E-blast or click on any links. The AHVAP team has reported this email, and please know, our standard process for the registered suppliers is to receive a full attendee list about two weeks before the start of the conference. Continue to forward these phishing emails to the AHVAP office team at info@ahvap.org, and copy Liz at Eisenberg.elizabeth@scrippshealth.org. The security of our members is the utmost priority and we take these kinds of scams very seriously.

AHVAP COMMITTEE NEWS
James Russell, RN-BC, MBA, CVAHP, is the Director of Clinical Resource Management at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. The value analysis aspect of his role 100% focused on cancer care for the 700 impatient beds and over 1.5 million outpatient visits per year. As a research hospital, there could be about 1,600 studies ongoing at the same time. 50% of the 22,000 employees are conducting research. The challenge is getting continuity of the same products for continuity of the studies amidst product disruptions. He is involved in a pharmacotherapeutics committee with three times more spend in drugs than in products. He is very proud to work alongside two other value analysis leaders. Monthly Value Analysis meetings cover the perioperative service, and patient care nursing.

Utilization projects in healthcare value analysis strive to answer several essential questions. How are the specific products used? How should these products be used? What might cause misuse? Is there variation in product, practice, or both? Ultimately, utilization specifically addresses the practice and not necessarily the product. When an organization looks more closely at utilization, the savings that result can be sustainable.

Here is the top 3 reasons utilization savings are sustainable over conventional savings strategies.

  1. Utilization savings are not contract-dependent. As a contract rolls, tier levels change, or organization obligations shift, savings garnered by utilization projects are not affected. The tenant of utilization centers around the clinical effectiveness of a product type and not necessarily a specific product.
  2. Utilization savings become part of an organization’s clinical practice. When reviewing utilization opportunities, best practice is to establish and educate staff on ‘criteria for use.’ This is especially important for high-dollar supplies and/or supplies with specific indications for use set forth by manufacturers. As these criteria become part of the organization’s practice and protocol, utilization is sustained.
  3. Utilization savings are centered around clinical quality and guidelines. As Value Analysis teams execute on projects, changes made to clinical practice are based on solid clinical evidence. Only when this evidence changes through research or the guidance of organizations, such as Infusion Nurses Society (INS) or Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), should utilization change.

How do you approach utilization savings at your organization?

The next HIAC quarterly meeting is scheduled for September 20 where it will discuss its progress toward their goal of supporting AHVAP’s overarching goal of recruiting and retaining membership. To those efforts, members of HIAC who attend professional organization meetings promote the benefits of being an AHVAP member through printed materials and one-on-one discussions. HIAC membership is made up of suppliers who are appointed every two years based on overall support of AHVAP through conference exhibits & sponsorships, affiliate membership by employees of their company, participation on AHVAP committees, work groups and task forces as well as support of AHVAP’s educational mission.
AHVAP was live at AHRMM22 ─ through its IBEC MOU with AHRMM, AHVAP provides value analysis education through presentation of its VA101 course presented by Gloria Graham and VA201 course presented by Barbara Strain. There was great educational interest in value analysis at this year’s AHRMM and we learned through a pre-conference survey more than 50% of attendees had one year or less of experience. Value Analysis is growing!

The coronavirus pandemic has heightened interest among healthcare executives in revamping their supply chains. For many health systems and hospitals, the pandemic served as a reminder of the key role of supply chains, with many organizations struggling to secure personal protective equipment such as respirators in the early months of the crisis.

Health IT Security
Along with documented financial losses and reputational harm, healthcare cyberattacks have been known to endanger patient safety and adversely impact care delivery. With the goal of understanding how various healthcare cyberattack types can impact patient safety, Proofpoint commissioned Ponemon Institute to survey IT and IT security professionals in the healthcare sector. The survey included self-reported responses from 641 experts in the field.
Value-based care doesn’t stop at discharge
Molnlycke Health Care®
As the healthcare industry embraces a value-based care model, it’s time for Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs) to reimagine patient transitions throughout the continuum of care. Lack of
standardization between acute and post-acute care creates opportunity for failure points and worsened patient outcomes. By promoting communication, coordination, and consistency of care in each step of the patient journey, IDNs can maximize total value and achieve improved outcomes across the board.

Supply chain trading partners expressed broad support for the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) proposed rule on uniform licensing standards for wholesale distributors and third-party logistics providers (3PLs), which are set to replace the current patchwork system of state licensing standards. The standards implement aspects of the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) and are meant to plug holes in the country’s pharmaceutical supply chain.

Parts of a Northern California hospital were without power Tuesday night after backup generators failed during a historic heat wave. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC), part of the County of Santa Clara Health System, said in a statement that the blackout lasted for approximately four hours at “a few” of its buildings. “Our emergency plans went into place immediately, and patient safety was never compromised,” the public system said in a statement provided to Fierce Healthcare. “At no time were patients put into life-threatening situations.”

COVID-19 has impacted the world. From social isolation to the availability of gas, groceries, and medical necessities, we have felt the crunch. As the effects of COVID-19 linger, we must consider how supply chain issues are to be addressed. Supply shortages in aluminum, computer chips, paper pulp, and other materials create a ripple effect on health care providers, hospitals, and other health care systems.
