Leadership
What does courage mean to you? Do you think we can be courageous in our personal and professional life? Do you think we have the opportunity and responsibility to be courageous?
As healthcare continues to transform, one thing remains certain: those who lead with insight, purpose, and preparation will shape the future of our field. In an environment marked by disruption, innovation, and rising complexity, preparing for your professional future is not just wise—it’s essential.
In June, I had the privilege of being one of four representing our value analysis profession at SGNA. We were invited as special guests and to assist with a group activity where AHVAP’s Executive Director, Dr Hudson Garrett, was speaking to the audience about the importance of value analysis and interprofessional collaboration. The session was more than talking about our work—but championing it. This wasn’t just a speaking opportunity, it was recognition of the essential role VA professionals play in driving clinical, operational, and financial outcomes across healthcare.
In the complex healthcare landscape, making informed choices about products and services is paramount. This is where Value Analysis enters the picture. It is not merely a matter of crunching numbers and comparing prices; it is about holistically assessing the worth of various options, balancing fiscal prudence with clinical excellence, by meticulously scrutinizing every facet of potential purchases, Value Analysis endeavors to ensure that healthcare organizations are not only cost-effective but also equipped to offer the highest standards of patient care.

Industry News and Developments

Dear AHVAP Members and Partners:

The following communication is being provided urgently to all AHVAP members at the request of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. AHVAP is a member of the Infragard National Alliance Program.

The ongoing Iran conflict is causing a heightened threat environment in the United States. Low-level cyber attacks against US networks by pro-Iranian hacktivists are likely, and cyber actors affiliated with the Iranian government may conduct attacks against US networks. Iran also has a long-standing commitment to target US Government officials it views as responsible for the death of an Iranian military commander killed in January 2020.

The likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently mobilizing to violence in response to the conflict would likely increase if Iranian leadership issued a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence against targets in the Homeland. Multiple recent Homeland terrorist attacks have been motivated by anti-Semitic or anti-Israel sentiment, and the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict could contribute to US-based individuals plotting additional attacks.

Please refer to the attached Homeland Security Bulletin for detailed information from the Department of Homeland Security.

McKinsey
Health systems in the United States have had to contend with continuous economic pressures, including inflation, high labor costs, shifts in sites of care away from acute settings, and downward pressure on reimbursement. To adapt to these factors, health system leaders are pursuing multifaceted approaches to reduce costs and improve revenues without compromising quality of care.

Intelligent Living
The healthcare industry is undergoing a massive digital transformation. With rising patient volumes, tightening regulations, and shrinking margins, medical facilities face unprecedented pressure to optimize operations. At the heart of this challenge lies medical equipment management—an area where inefficiencies can cost millions while putting patient care at risk.

Vox
Over the past 20 years, nearly 200 rural hospitals have closed, and experts warn that another 700 are at risk of closure in the near future. To put that in context, Texas alone has seen 25 hospital closures since 2005. If nothing is done, the state could lose over half the remaining small-town hospitals. That means people are driving farther for care, sometimes over an hour, or waiting longer to get help. These delays could lead to worse health outcomes.

NPR
Millions of Americans are falling through the cracks of the U.S. health care system, unable to afford coverage or qualify for Medicaid despite serious medical needs, as the country’s fragmented approach to insurance leaves many low- and middle-income people uninsured. Pending legislation and policy changes threaten to exacerbate the crisis, potentially stripping coverage from millions more and deepening disparities in access to care, health outcomes, and financial stability.

Reuters
America's Health Insurance Plans said on Monday that U.S. health insurers will take additional measures to simplify their requirements for prior approval on medicines and medical services. Health insurers will work to develop standardized data and submission requirements for electronic prior authorization by January 1, 2027, the industry trade group said in a statement.

The Guardian
Robert F. Kennedy Jr, the US health secretary, faced a bruising day on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, including being forced to retract accusations against a Democratic congressman after claiming the lawmaker’s vaccine stance was bought by $2m in pharmaceutical contributions. In a hearing held by the House health subcommittee, Kennedy was met with hours of contentious questioning over budget cuts, massive healthcare fraud and accusations he lied to senators to secure his confirmation.
