Message from the President
Dear ASHHRA Colleagues,

The fall season has arrived, and the months are flying by. When the Labor Day holiday comes, it signals the start of the holiday season. The ASHHRA Board hosted their inaugural meeting under MCI USA last month. It was wonderful to see everyone virtually, but I hope to meet everyone in person soon. The delta variant has thrown a curve ball at us from a planning perspective, but we look forward to showing you what we have in store for 2022.

Employers can have correct policies, rules and practices, but if they fail to properly document, they could find themselves in a tough spot if an employee sues for discrimination or under another employment statute. During this webinar, you will explore the importance of documentation with reference to employment issues and provide best practices guidance to HR professionals in the health care setting with presenter Stephanie Rawitt.

Findings of a new report highlight 40% of hospitals accelerated hiring to meet the increased demand in medical services following COVID-19 lockdowns. Aon plc’s 16th annual Benefits Survey of Hospitals revealed 36% of hospitals surveyed plan for normal hiring and 24% are being cautious by delaying or issuing a hiring freeze. The survey findings strongly differentiate from 2020 when hospitals took measures to cut costs during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.

Although human brains are hardwired to make snap judgments, we can still deconstruct the stereotypes that conflate impairment with overt dysfunction and suffering. This is one of many important tenets of the global social movement that had inspired the ADA and that continues today. Unfortunately, the medical community has lagged behind.

Shift work and long work hours (for example, 12-hour shifts) increase employees’ risks of chronic illness, and this ultimately contributes to sizeable excess health care spending for companies. However, relatively little emphasis has been placed on mitigating the long-term chronic health effects of shift work.
