Message from the President
Greetings, ASHHRA Colleagues!

I can't wait for everyone to CONNECT, INNOVATE and TRANSFORM at the Virtual Conference, which will be held in less than two weeks. As an HR professional, this is my favorite time of year for charging my batteries. This year was a physically and mentally stressful time for many of our members. I ask that you come and unplug from your daily routine so that you can focus on learning and absorbing the message from our keynote speaker, Erin Brockovich.

AHA has launched its new People Matter, Words Matter poster series to help combat behavioral health stigma in health care settings by encouraging providers to adopt respectful, patient-centered language. In the first poster, Linden Oaks Behavioral Health provided information on using people-first language, which primarily acknowledges the person rather than the illness or disability. The AHA, along with behavioral health and language experts from member hospitals and partner organizations, will continue this series of downloadable posters in the coming months for hospitals to distribute and display in clinical settings.

As National Hospital Week (May 9-15) approaches with the theme Inspiring Hope through Healing, the AHA would like to honor the entire community of hospital and health system team members for all of their work. To say thank you, AHA is collaborating with Musicians on Call to produce an original song and video inspired by the words of health care workers. AHA invites health care workers to share their feedback online or via social media with the tag #hospitalweek of what has inspired them throughout the pandemic.

It’s hard to imagine a more important time for federal action to modernize our aging and disability financing and delivery system. COVID-19 has shone a spotlight on underresourced congregate settings and policies that rely too heavily on institutional settings of care. It has also highlighted the role of the direct caregiving workforce, which has heroically provided vital services and supports, often in very difficult situations and with little support.

Becker's Hospital Review
We hear leaders talk about the events of the past year as being a technology and innovation accelerant — the same can be said for the push for greater diversity, equity and inclusion in support of an organization's people, and the people they serve. Here are three things to consider when promoting inclusivity, closing disparity and inspiring the future of health care. And, ultimately, empowering our people for the betterment of patients and families.

Worry, exhaustion, constantly changing safety rules and long hours of wearing PPE are just a few things America’s health-care workers cite as the hardest parts of going to work on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a nationwide Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation poll that asked more than 1,300 front-line health care workers to describe the hardest part of working during the pandemic.

Fierce Healthcare
It may seem too good to be true to have an affordable health benefits plan that actually contains cost and improves outcomes and experience for employees. While it is possible, it requires a slight shift in thinking, and leaning into and embracing a new model of managing health benefits. Direct-to-employer contracting is a promising model with the potential to make health care work better. But employers must step up and innovate alongside providers, not against them.
