Message from the President
Dear ASHHRA Colleagues,
Welcome to March 2020 — the month of Health Care HR Week, St. Patrick’s Day, the start of daylight saving time, the first day of spring and, unfortunately, COVID-19. I had a lovely idea for a brief missive about Health Care HR Week but COVID-19 meetings and prep nixed that plan.

ASHHRA News
As HR leaders in health care, you are acutely aware how illness can affect our community and our workforce. We at ASHHRA and the American Hospital Association (AHA) share your concern for your patients, staff and communities, as the realities of the continuing spread of COVID-19 become more clear. ASHHRA Exchange is the ideal place to pose questions or update other health care HR practitioners on how your organization is handling this threat.

As leaders of the human capital of your organization, we recommend following the CDC’s advice on preparing for COVID-19 and protecting your workforce, found here. Since the outbreak began, the AHA has worked closely with the CDC, Department of Health and Human Services and other agencies to ensure the health care field is informed and prepared to respond. The AHA has developed and shared a number of resources and updates the COVID-19 webpage daily. The resources of the AHA are especially valuable in this quickly changing environment and will be updated consistently as circumstances evolve.

A multi-year strategy for achieving gender equality may not be a priority for the majority of organizations surveyed in Mercer's recent "When Women Thrive 2020 Global Report." The report found that 81% of companies surveyed worldwide said that diversity and inclusion is important. However, only 42% have created a plan for reaching gender equality.

Today's healthcare industry is one that focuses on data, metrics, and outcomes. But to achieve success that influences profit margins, clinical outcomes, and reimbursement, healthcare leaders also need to create a healthy organizational culture and work environment.

COVID-19 Updates
STAT
Much of the current discourse on the COVID-19 outbreak focuses on comparisons of the total case load and total deaths with those caused by seasonal influenza. Perhaps more important is the disproportionate number of severe COVID-19 cases, many requiring hospitalization including ICU stays. What does an avalanche of uncharacteristically severe respiratory viral illness cases mean for our health care system? How much excess capacity currently exists, and how quickly could new cases saturate and overwhelm the number of available hospital beds, face masks and other resources?

Kaiser Health News
As the U.S. battles to limit the spread of the highly contagious new coronavirus, the number of health care workers ordered to self-quarantine because of potential exposure to an infected patient is rising at an exponential pace. With the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases mushrooming by the day, a quarantine response of this magnitude would quickly leave the health care system short-staffed and overwhelmed.

Fierce Healthcare
Hospitals should prepare for supply chain disruptions to drugs and personal protective equipment (PPE) like masks due to the burgeoning coronavirus outbreak, several experts say. The novel coronavirus, which has generated more than 150 cases in the U.S., has hospitals keeping a close watch on their supplies. Experts also say the virus has strained supply chains because the epicenter is located in China, a key manufacturer of PPE and active ingredients for drugs.
