Message from the President
Dear ASHHRA Colleagues,

This is the time of year that marks milestones for many. It is graduation time, end of school year and beginning of summer. It means vacations, road trips and a wedding or two.

As I attended the high school graduations of my niece and nephew, I thought about the time ahead of them to prepare for their life careers — Cheyanne focusing on teaching at the elementary school level and Tommy following in his father’s footsteps as an aeronautical engineer. Each a worthy and lofty career goal.

What a wonderful time in their lives, looking forward to the possibilities and dreams open to them. Each of their lives being molded by their educators, professionals and leaders with whom they come into contact. I thought of them today as I met with an employee who is facing the opposite challenge in her life. She is in the middle of her cancer treatment and needs just a few more weeks of leave in the hopes of eradicating her illness. A difficult conversation at best and one that most of us have faced in our careers.

I found myself overwhelmed by the charge we are given and the human condition of each individual we interact with each and every day. Some are in the beginning of their careers, some seasoned and others moving up to loftier positions. And some ... just surviving. We are more than the policies and procedures; we are more than compensation strategies; we are more than benefit structures or the strategic plans. We are the keepers of secrets, we are shoulders to lift others' troubles and we are human.

So as we witness the launch of a family member or friend into another chapter of their lives — whether it be moving to university life, creating a new life as a couple, having a baby, moving out on their own or in the last season of their life — let’s hope that others who are keepers of our loved ones in the workplace, university, community or health care facility have someone who will be their keepers of secrets when needed, shoulders to lift and comfort them by being human.

Here’s to all the keepers of secrets, the strong shoulders and the human kindness. Here’s to Human Resources!

Have a wonderful summer.

Last month's global ransomware cyber-attack that upended hospitals across the globe reminds us that every innovation comes with challenges. In all industries, especially the health care industry, connectivity offers tremendous benefits but also increased risk. Although these attacks disrupted health care services and others, the risk extends to every aspect of connected health care, including connected medical devices. This industry must come together to address growing challenges.

Working on advocacy and policy is challenging. Not only is it complex, fluid and increasingly politicized, it is also challenging to measure progress and communicate success. Understanding this, in 2012, the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky launched Promoting Responsive Health Policy — a six-year, multifaceted initiative to address four broad health policy areas.

Patient Satisfaction
Patient Engagement HIT
Health care organizations with high patient satisfaction and CAHPS scores see a multitude of benefits. High patient satisfaction scores usually result in higher reimbursement payments from CMS, better patient retention rates and the assurance for hospital staff that they fostered a positive experience for patients.

Physicians & Nurses

Four out of five physician mothers say they experience workplace discrimination, according to the results of a study published last month in JAMA Internal Medicine. The researchers were inspired to study the topic after reading thousands of Facebook posts on the difficulties of balancing medicine and motherhood on a popular social and professional network forum called Physician Moms Group (aka PMG), an active community with more than 65,000 members.

Patient Engagement HIT
Using nurse communication to deliver compassionate care is a high priority in the health care industry, especially considering the unique impact nurses have on the patient experience. Nurse empathy and communications have a tremendous effect on patient satisfaction because nurses are on the frontlines of most patient encounters.

At the 2017 Great Place to Work For All’s conference in Chicago, the word millennial was buzzing around like a busy bee. The millennial tech smarts, diverse demographics, large population and inspiring, fresh ideas make them beneficial to the workforce in a way that is crucial to business success and relevance.

The hospital and health system field is moving from its traditional role as a "repair shop for disease" to serving as an agent for building healthier communities, says AHA board member Allen Weiss, M.D. In coming years, he sees the image of the hospital becoming less about a building with four walls and more about partnering with others to provide care where people live and work.
