Dear ASHHRA Colleagues,

For most of us, and especially those in human resources, current events can play a dramatic role in our professional lives. The recent deaths of three African Americans under upsetting circumstances and the unrest that has followed, are somber examples of this.

Some hospitals are stepping forward by establishing meetings to provide employees with a safe space to openly discuss what is going on, ask questions and express feelings. Other hospitals and clinics are struggling to find ways to deal with the vast array of emotions that their employees are feeling.

All of us want answers as we attempt to resolve these issues. We know it will not happen easily or quickly. However, what we can do immediately is have open and honest dialogue, listen to employees and help them cope with the traumatic events we have all observed.

As human resources professionals, I do not have to tell you that it is our mission to work to ensure that there is no tolerance for racism or unfair treatment of our employees of any color, especially in the workplace.

Our staff are not just “employees” — they are our friends and family. Many of them are the “saints” who I wrote about last month.

At the end of the day, these recent events should be a burden on all of our hearts; a burden we must work together to lift in our workplace and in our world. We cannot overcome these challenges in a single moment. It will take years of dedication, hard work and teamwork.

Now, more than ever, we must strive to bring people together in an atmosphere of inclusiveness and diversity, and strive to overcome any and all roadblocks that may hinder our mission and our dream.
