Dear ASHHRA Colleagues,

I had the opportunity to visit Philadelphia for the first time last week. What an amazing city.

I visited Independence Hall on July 8, which was the 240th anniversary of Colonel John Nixon’s first public proclamation of the Declaration of Independence to the colonists. To honor that special day, Governor Jay Nixon from Missouri (a decedent of John Nixon) re-enacted the first declaration.

Now is probably the appropriate time for me to share that my undergraduate degree is in Political Science with an emphasis on Constitutional Law. Needless to say, I was moved to tears as I experienced this moment in history. I could imagine what the colonists felt as they heard this proclamation. If it has been awhile since you have last read the Declaration of Independence, I would encourage you to take a moment and read it again. It is a great foundational reminder of what we were trying to accomplish as we came together as a country.

If I were to be completely honest, the entire trip was filled with emotion. I spent two days in Constitution Hall. I read every placard and learned as much as I could about the Constitution’s complicated history and evolution. I even had the opportunity to see the original Bill of Rights. As I reconnected with our nation’s history, I couldn’t help but also reflect on everything we are working through as a country today and the impact that has on us as individuals, members of families, friends, community members and leaders.

My heartfelt thoughts go out to all of those impacted by recent events. Now, more than ever, we need connection and support. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to connect with you and know that there is always someone there to take my call, provide support and help guide me. Please know that there is a network of support for you during these times.
